Kenyan boxer Christine Ongare speaks after Olympics exit : The standard Sports

“Olympic Games is not about winning, but it is about getting there and been called an Olympian”
Those are the words of Kenyan boxer Christine Ongare after the round of 16 match on Sunday against Irish Magno of the Philippines which the Kenyan lost on a unanimous decision.
For Ongare just getting to the Olympics and getting a chance to box on the big stage is not only a big achievement but also an inspiration to many youngsters.
“I am a girl from the ghetto and I have come a long way to be able to perform at the Olympics. I will not even think that I lost the bout today, all I will think about is that I performed at the big stage and will be counted as an Olympian,” Ongare said.

The World Under-20 Championships are slated for August 17 to 22 at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
The Local Organising Committee (LOC) has been working round the clock to ensure everything is in place before the teams start arriving in Nairobi next month.
Currently, the main focus at the moment is the Olympics Games that kick off next week in Tokyo, Japan, but all those concerned should not forget that the World Under-20 is an equally important event and especially now that Kenya will be the host.

The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic hit the world last year, which threw many things, including sports, into disarray.
Many countries including Kenya went into lockdown and unprecedented curfews followed. Various sectors of the economy in Kenya took a beating, with many breadwinners losing their jobs.
Sports is one area that was gravely affected by the pandemic in Kenya after the government halted the leagues.
Last week, the State allowed the ARC Equator Rally to proceed in Naivasha, despite the halt on local games. This left many Kenyans, especially in the sports fraternity with lots of questions about why the rally was allowed to proceed normally while other sports are on hold.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed has ordered the contractor working on the Sh350 million Wote Stadium, Makueni County to stop following months of stalled progress.
Accompanied by Labour CS Simon Chelugui and Sports Kenya Chairman Fred Muteti, Amina toured the facility on Tuesday, February 2, expressing dissatisfaction on the “ongoing works” and faulting the contractor for never delivering in time.
“I was here in June 2020 and the PS has been coming here very frequently and we have a fantastic briefing on this project. The contractor has always promised to achieve completion in the given timeline but it has never worked,” CS Amina said during the inspection.

CS Amina Lectures Contractor Over Stalled Stadium: “You’re Embarrassing The Govt”
Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed on Tuesday read the riot act to a contractor over the stalled construction of Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret.
The facility has been under construction since 2017 and was supposed to be ready by December last year. By Tuesday, however, the contractor —Shiv Construction Company — was starting to construct the second floor of the pavilion and VIP terraces.
This left CS Amina shocked when she toured the site accompanied by a team from the President’s Delivery Unit.
She wondered why the Sh304 million stadium was delayed despite the ministry pumping Sh100 million.
