New study shows flies mutant for schizophrenia-associated genes respond well to anti-psychotics

Images of a groups of fruit flies (small black dots) placed in a triangular arena. Normal flies (left triangle) like to be a certain distance apart showing their preference for social space, flies mutants in the schizophrenia-associated Rim gene (right) prefer increased in social distance.
Mutations in the schizophrenia associated cacophony calcium channel gene causes a reduction in calcium signalling in the memory centres of the fly brain called the mushroom body (the two L shaped structures in the images) resulting in memory loss in the flies.

Structural Racism Tied to Increased Psychosis Risk

email article
A pattern of racial disparities in the U.S. was linked with increased risk of psychosis, according to a literature review.
Individual and collective trauma, enhanced stress resulting from generations of prenatal and perinatal complications, and the neurodevelopmental and neurobiological effects of discrimination were associated with disproportionate rates of psychotic disorders among people of color and people from low socioeconomic backgrounds, reported Deidre Anglin, PhD, of the City College of New York, and colleagues.
Black and Latinx people had significantly more exposure to psychosis risk factors at the neighborhood and individual level due to structural racism, Anglin said in a press briefing at the American Psychiatric Association (APA) virtual meeting. The findings were published in the ....

'Psychic' Blood of St. Januarius Liquefies — Three Months of Good News Ahead

Louisville, Kentucky, held its annual Run for the Roses, which was delayed in 2020 because of the pandemic. Pamplona, Spain, cancelled its annual Running of the Bulls for the second straight year due to the pandemic. Perhaps organizers of these ‘runnings’ should have checked with Naples, Italy, where the thrice-annually ‘running’ of the blood of St. Januarius is never postponed – which is a good thing because the solidified red fluid is known for its psychic powers based on whether it liquefies or not. Based on that, anyone planning a ‘running’ in the next three months got some good news from good old (he died in 305 CE) Januarius. ....
