'Unnecessarily cruel': U.K. weighing ban on boiling lobsters alive

Crustaceans do not have a centralized nervous system, unlike vertebrates animals that have a backbone in their body. This means they do not die immediately from common killing methods, like plunging a knife straight into their body, said the report. In fact, most methods of slaughtering crustaceans, like boiling, gassing or drowning them are not “recommended” at all. 
“Lobsters struggle violently for approximately two minutes after being placed in boiling water before they stop moving,” reads the report, written by Stephanie Yu. 
She goes on to add that “scalding” animals to death is “unnecessarily cruel” a belief that has been echoed by other animal welfare advocates and organizations, like the U.K.-based Crustacean Compassion. ....

Nearly 2 tons of ivory to be crushed in New York City's Central Park


The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will destroy nearly two tons of illegal ivory confiscated through state enforcement efforts. The ivory has a net worth of more than $8 million, representing more than 100 elephants. The ivory tusks, trinkets, statues, jewelry, and other decorative items will be crushed in Central Park, New York City while supporters gather to watch, sending a clear message that the state will not tolerate wildlife crime that threatens to wipe out Africa’s elephants.
The event is being organized by New York State’s Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), with support from Tiffany & Co. ....
