Arroyo: It's time to end racism in Pennsylvania

Most would agree that racism is not a laughing matter. But prejudice is insidious. Like pesty mosquitos at a Memorial Day picnic, it buzzes around us in seemingly innocent humor that takes liberties with racial or ethnic caricatures. We all hear punch lines that made races and nationalities stingy, avaricious, or in need of help fastening a light bulb.
However, those familiar jokes are based on what society no longer considers funny. You help end racism by simply saying, “I don’t get it.”
Racism may also appear as a well-intentioned compliment.
It is one thing to say, “Beyoncé is a beautiful Black woman:” quite another to say, “Beyoncé is beautiful for a Black woman.” Prejudice has color on both sides of the coin. It’s also offensive to say, “He’s a great basketball player for a white man.” Such expressions betray a belief that persons of a particular race are afflicted by congenital tendencies. ....

Activists plan protest over Christian Hall's death after police shooting

Questions about the shooting of Christian Hall by the Pennsylvania State Police have not gone away since the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office ruled the use of force justified.
For activist Treandous T.C Cuthbertson, these questions demand answers: Who gave the order to shoot? When did Hall become a threat to the officers? Why did the statement from the Pennsylvania State Police say that Hall pointed his gun at them “when the video evidence disproves that”?
Hall was carrying what turned out to be a realistic-looking pellet gun when he was shot on a highway overpass on Dec. 30, 2020. His hands were raised when he was shot, and as far as the available video shows, the gun was pointed up and away from police.   ....

Though no topic is off the table, the main purpose is to bring residents together  regardless of race or religious affiliation.
“I think all (of us) are on the same page. The goal is to promote healing and whatever the format takes for our community that we as religious leaders can identify how we can be a help to the community with our churches and congregations and to promote that healing that is necessarily in these divisive times,” Vogel said. “We’ve just been through a year of just complete udder confusion, divisiveness and anxiety-driven things. Peace and healing is what’s necessary in order for us as a community to move forward in a positive way. ....
