We appreciate you joining us today for this webinar on the nazi murder of the disabled. And the 1945 trial. We are so fortunate to have as our special guest today dr. Patricia haber rice from the United States Holocaust Memorial museum in washington, d. C. I want to give a little bit of background about dr. Rice. She is director of the division of the Senior Historian at the jack joseph and morton Mendel Center of holocaust studies. She is an expert of the nazi on the victims of nazi annihilation policies and effort s to bring the nazi perpetrators to justice after world war ii. She has a lot of publications. So i will just mention a small number of those for you today. There was no town or village here. There were neighboring farms. There was an anglican chapel where there is now the carolina inn. There was no town to speak of. On the day that they laid the cornerstone for the first diversity building, they had an auction of town lots. They understood that as the university was conceived, it would need a town around it to support it, provide businesses and a place to live. It became chapel hill and was born on the same day. The university was chartered in 1789. Ground broke for the first building in 1793. A year and a half later, 1795, the university opened. They had an Opening Ceremony in january of 1795.
