Facing protest, Museum of Chinese in America cancels exhibition about Asian American art collective Godzilla

The Museum of Chinese in America in New York s Chinatown neighbourhood
New York’s Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) has called off an exhibition focusing on the 1990s Asian American art collective Godzilla that was originally to open this May. This decision comes after 19 of the collective’s members withdrew from the show, asserting that the museum supported the construction of a new jail in its Chinatown neighbourhood.
MOCA denies the allegation, saying that the institution “is and has always been unalterably opposed to building a jail in Chinatown”. In a statement, the museum adds, “The MOCA team has expressed MOCA’s opposition to a Chinatown jail in public interviews, conversations and meetings with hundreds of people across the spectrum of Chinatown organisations, Asian American organisations and community advocacy groups since plans were first announced in August 2018.” ....

Museum of Chinese in America Cancels Godzilla Collective Exhibition After Protesting Artists Withdraw

March 11, 2021 at 3:00pm
New York’s Museum of Chinese in America has canceled an exhibition of work by pioneering artist collective Godzilla: Asian American Arts Network after nineteen of the group’s members withdrew in protest of what they contend is the museum’s support for a large new jail in Chinatown, where the institution is located. The exhibition, “Godzilla vs. the Art World: 1990–2001,” was to open in May focusing on the efforts of the collective over the 12-year span of its existence, during which it published a newsletter, organized “slide slams,” and sponsored symposiums on Asian American art in an effort to elevate its presence on the national art scene and to foster intergenerational and interdisciplinary collaboration on a more local scale. ....

Don't Close Rikers—Fix It | City Journal

New York
More than a year ago, New York City embarked on one of its most ambitious infrastructure projects in memory: spending $8.7 billion to build four high-rise jails across four boroughs, so that it could close its eight-decade-old jail complex on Rikers Island a “penal colony,” in Mayor Bill de Blasio’s phrase by 2026. Much has changed since this heady 2019 announcement. Covid-19 has decimated the city’s budget. One of three community lawsuits against the four jails has met with initial success. A rise in crime is a reminder that it will be difficult to keep inmate numbers below the four neighborhood jails’ far lower capacity. Even before the city breaks ground, the jails projects are already two years late, with the completion date pushed to 2028, well into the next mayor’s potential second term. ....
