Study: Gut microbiome can predict changes in Type 2 diabetes related glucose regulation

Study: Gut microbiome can predict changes in Type 2 diabetes related glucose regulation
A study carried out by researchers from the Institute of Genomics, University of Tartu revealed that human gut microbiome can be used to predict changes in Type 2 diabetes related glucose regulation up to four years ahead.
Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disease characterized by elevated blood glucose levels that contributes to millions of deaths worldwide each year and its prevalence is rapidly increasing. Type 2 diabetes is preceded by prediabetes - a condition when the glucose levels have started to rise, but the progression of the disease can still be stopped and inverted. Therefore, early detection of the disease progression is necessary and previous research suggests that gut microbiome could be used for that purpose, said Elin Org, last author of the paper and associate professor in genomics and microbiomics. ....

Laboratory Information Management System for Genomic Laboratories Launched Labmate Online

Feb 27 2021 Read 9244 Times
CliniSys has launched a new laboratory information management system for genomic laboratories in the UK. The company has brought GLIMS Genomics to the UK from Europe, where it is being successfully deployed at Poitiers University Hospital in France and will be introduced into seven additional laboratories in coming months.
GLIMS Genomics has been designed to support the effective management of genomic laboratories and the UK launch is particularly timely as the NHS is now delivering a national Genomic Medicine Service for England through seven Genomic Laboratory Hubs.
These aim to deliver a comprehensive, standardised testing service for English hospitals, as genomic testing starts to become a routine part of clinical practice.   ....

New, more reliable testing program rolled-out to hospital staff to curb Covid transmission rates

New, more reliable testing program rolled-out to hospital staff to curb Covid transmission rates
Frontline staff at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals (NNUH) are among the first in the country to benefit from the rollout of more accurate saliva tests in a bid to curb Covid transmission rates.
Combined with the vaccination programme, these rapid tests should help to significantly reduce the ability of the virus to spread in healthcare settings.
In partnership with the Norfolk and Norwich Pathology Lab, the Earlham Institute (EI) and the Eastern Pathology Alliance, the Government-commissioned programme introduces a new, more reliable COVID testing programme for frontline workers. ....

Can Seabiscuit's DNA explain his elite racing ability?

Seabiscuit was not an impressive-looking horse. He was considered quite lazy, preferring to eat and sleep in his stall rather than exercise. He’d been written off by most of the racing industry after losing his first 17 races. But Seabiscuit eventually became one of the most beloved thoroughbred champions of all time – voted 1938 Horse of the Year after winning his legendary match race as an underdog against Triple Crown winner War Admiral in 1938.
As a molecular physiologist, the concept of understanding how specific gene variants can affect performance, whether in athletics, learning or even how an organism develops, has always intrigued me. Thoroughbred racing seemed a promising arena to study this idea, since successful racehorses need not only elite physical attributes, but also the mental makeup of a champion, sometimes referred to as the “will to win.” ....
