Identifying and tracking new and potentially dangerous strains of COVID-19 is particularly important. Those new variants can only be detected using genetic sequencing.
More than a week after Manitoba’s top doctor acknowledged the possible presence of the India variant in the province, nothing more has been said about it.

On April 26, chief provincial public health officer Dr. Brent Roussin told a news conference about an unconfirmed positive result for B.1.617, the same strain of COVID-19 that is causing widespread deaths in India. He said public-health officials had early indications in late April that a positive case of COVID-19 linked to international travel may have been caused by B.1.61 ....

B.C. to limit screening for COVID-19 variants of concern

JENNIFER GAUTHIER/Reuters
British Columbia will stop screening all positive COVID-19 tests for variants of concern, with medical experts saying the practice becomes less meaningful as variants drive case counts during the third wave of the pandemic, and one of them is poised to become the dominant source of infections in the province.
B.C. is now developing a strategy that will limit screening for variants largely to surveillance testing, which involves a sampling of the population, and will focus on health measures to prevent deaths and serious illness. It is expected to be implemented in coming weeks.
Mel Krajden, medical director of the BC Centre for Disease Control Public Health Laboratory, said it is unrealistic to stop the virus from spreading without “draconian” restrictions, and that efforts should instead be focused on protecting the population from their most serious harms. ....

385 total confirmed and presumptive variant cases in Regina; Sask. reports 87 new COVID-19 cases

REGINA
Saskatchewan reported 87 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, along with 114 recoveries and one more death.
VARIANTS OF CONCERN
Though the province did not confirm additional variant cases Wednesday, there are currently 313 presumptive cases. Those cases are in the Far Northeast (one), Saskatoon (six), Central East (five), Regina (264), South Central (23) and Southeast (14) zones. The Regina zone accounts for 84 per cent of presumptive variant cases.
There are 135 confirmed variant cases in the province: 129 B.1.1.1.7 (which originated in the U.K.) and six B.1.3.5.1 (which originated in South Africa). The province said one previously reported B1.1.1.7 variant case was removed because it was a duplicate. The Regina zone accounts for 121 – or 90 per cent – of the confirmed variant cases. ....
