Trinicenter.com - Dr Selwyn Cudjoe - Shamelessness

March 09, 2021
Sometimes we, as commentators, use our columns to pontificate about the correct moral and ethical thing to do, but I wonder if we were placed in positions of power would we not have done the same things that we condemn public officials for doing. I am thinking of Winston Duke, his wife, Kim de Silva, and all the other spouses of powerful men and women in government and trade unions who use their official connections to set up their better halves in business in which they are connected.
T&T is no exception.
A few days ago the inspector general of the U.S. Transportation Department in which Elaine Chao, the former transportation secretary during the Trump administration and wife of Mitch McConnell, the minority leader and most powerful Republican in the US, was accused of using her office to promote her family business that is led by her father and her sister. ....

Trinicenter.com - Dr Selwyn Cudjoe - Black People & the Social Contract

By Dr Selwyn R. Cudjoe
March 01, 2021
No society can smash the social contract and be exempt from the consequences, and the consequences are chaos for everybody in the society.
James Baldwin,
Conversations
There are two troubling aspects of slavery and colonialism that remain within our consciousness even though we claim that slavery and colonialism are conditions of the past. The first is the self-hate that these socio-economic formations have created in Black people and a resulting tendency to do everything to prevent fellow Blacks from moving forward. Frantz Fanon discussed this condition in
Black Skin, White Masks.
The second aspect of these phenomena was the tendency of incoming groups (immigrants) who, when they met Black people in these Americas, assumed all the biases of the dominant group, and treated Black people with as much scorn and contempt as the oppressor group. ....

Lawmakers in Costa Rica ask government to speed up medical cannabis debate

Deputies from different political parties on Tuesday called on the President of Costa Rica, Carlos Alvarado, to use his powers to summon for debate in Parliament a bill that would legalize medical cannabis.
The Legislative Assembly is in extraordinary sessions until July, a period in which only the Executive Power can set the agenda for debate on projects.
“We are making an urgent joint call by the country for the Executive to convene the hemp and cannabis project. We cannot miss opportunities based on myths and fears,” declared the deputy Paola Vega, a proponent of the initiative, at a press conference. ....

Marijuana Legalization Won't Stop Mexico's Cartels | The National Interest

Mexico is poised to become just the third country in the world to fully legalize marijuana.
Mexico is poised to become just the third country in the world to fully legalize marijuana (after Uruguay and Canada). If legalized, the size of the country would make it the world’s largest legal cannabis market. Already, headlines are blaring that the new law could curtail Mexico’s deadly criminal groups by denting their profits, but with drug cartels entrenched and diversified in an array of illicit markets, this is chimerical thinking.
The law currently under consideration would legalize marijuana throughout the supply chain from planting and harvesting to consumption. Even so, the law would not give the upper hand to small and medium-sized growers over corporations much less an ability to compete with cartels’ proven capacity to deliver drugs to domestic and international markets alike. There are also serious questions about Mexico’s ability to ensure the rule ....

Trinicenter.com - Selwyn R. Cudjoe - A Black Race Position

January 19, 2021
Last Thursday, in his response to a letter written by 23 Afro-Trinbagonians about the placement of Black students in our secondary schools, Kamal Persad, coordinator of the Indian Review Committee, responded: It is clear the under-performance of Afro-children in the education system is still at the top of the black agenda. Accordingly, these 23 persons of African descent adopted an unmistakable black race position (
Express, January 14).
It is wise to contrast Persad s position with a statement of Professor Brian Copeland, Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies, at its 2020 graduation: As graduates of The UWI, you are beneficiaries of a public spending that covered some 80 per cent of what it costs to educate you….[You must] use your experience not just to develop yourself in your chosen careers but, even as you do so, that you do all you can to continue the fight of forming a society that better addresses the problems we face today ....
