Trinicenter.com - Dr Selwyn Cudjoe - Opening the borders

April 13, 2021
I left Trinidad and Tobago on March 16, 2020, a few days before the borders were closed to citizens and visitors alike. I was on the verge of departing for a ten-day visit to India, at the invitation of the Indian government as a part of its Academic Visitors Programme for distinguished scholars.
Three days before my planned departure, I cancelled my trip, with the blessings of the Indian High Commissioner of T&T, for fear that I might be trapped in India while the pandemic raged.
I have not returned to my homeland since because of the lockdown of the national borders. I have been told that I, a citizen of T&T, must apply for permission to enter my own country. I have been reluctant to do so since it strikes me as being antithetical to everything that inheres in my rights as a citizen. A citizen does not apply for permission to return to the land in which he or she was born. ....

On March 25, Georgia s Representative Park Cannon, a Black woman and state senator, was arrested for knocking on the door of the private office of Brian Kemp, the governor of Georgia, as he and six white men signed a law that effectively suppressed the right of Black people to vote in local, state and federal elections. Cannon was charged with two felony counts for obstruction of law enforcement and disruption of the General Assembly that is likely to send her to prison for eight years if she is found guilty.
Georgia s new law requires photo identification to vote absentee by mail, the source of many of the Democrats votes in state and federal elections. In the last presidential election, 1.3 million Georgians voted with absentee ballots; 65 percent of whom voted for Joe Biden. The new bill makes it a crime to offer water or food to voters waiting in line. Longer lines are often found in the poorer, densely populated communit ....

From politician to the ordinary farmer, Hutus united to get rid of the cockroaches, working together to exterminate their Tutsi friends, neighbors, co-workers and family members.
Kennedy Ndahiro, Dehumanization: How the Tutsis were reduced to cockroaches, snakes to be killed.
I use to think that the motto of the Trinidad and Tobago Constabulary was to protect and serve. Unfortunately, it seems that its present mission is to belittle and berate. Listening to Gary Griffith, the Commissioner of Police, one would think he is at war with the society or anyone who criticize his opinions or performance.
Nothing reflects this position clearer than his response to Kafra Kamon s call for his removal from office. Kambon called the deaths of Joel Balcon and Andrew Morris while in police custody abominable and objected to Griffith s description of young Black men as cockroaches. ....

Washington State Supreme Court Rules Drug Possession Law Unconstitutional In 5-4 Decision
On 3/13/21 at 12:14 AM EST
The Washington state Supreme Court has ruled that the state s felony drug possession law is unconstitutional. The court s decision potentially upends years worth of convictions, imprisonment and related fines, leaving prosecutors, lawyers and legislators unsure how to proceed.
A Democratic state legislator has introduced a replacement law to re-criminalize drug possession. But some legal and drug reform advocates would prefer it remain an inactive relic from War on Drugs.
The court issued its decision on February 25 in the case of
State of Washington v. Shannon Blake. The case involved a 2016 drug possession charge. ....
