Oregon officials seek answers about redistricting deadline

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) As Oregon’s redistricting deadline draws closer, and census data is delayed, the state’s legislative leaders and the secretary of state are discussing how to move forward.
Oregon’s Senate President Peter Courtney, D-Salem, and House Speaker Tina Kotek, D-Portlandfiled a petition Wednesday with the state Supreme Court, asking for a redistricting extension until the end of the year as they wait to receive 2020 census data.
However, during a news conference Wednesday Secretary of State Shemia Fagan said while she agrees about seeking clarity from the court, her office will offer another option to move forward with the current July 1 deadline and use alternative data sets from Portland State University’s Population Research Center. ....

Every 10 years after the census, the New Mexico state Legislature redraws its districts. While redistricting is always a contentious and often partisan task, this year, the drama is being felt by both parties. On Saturday, a compromise was reached: An independent committee would offer three to five maps that lawmakers choose from and can change before sending one to the governor. This clears the way for the bill to hit the Senate floor. KUNM spoke with Gwyneth Doland of New Mexico PBS to get a breakdown of the situation.
GWYNETH DOLAND: There was a task force that met for many months last year and into this year, a bipartisan group that was some sitting lawmakers, Democrats, Republicans, Senators, Representatives, also members of the community, good-government groups. There are some judges in there, folks like that. They wrote a bill, and they submitted it, that would take the task of redrawing these boundaries away from the lawmakers whose boundaries they are, right ....

Missouri Redistricting Process Begins Despite Delayed Census Data

Every 10 years, state legislatures across the country redraw their congressional map.
With census data from the federal government, local legislatures decide how to shape new districts that members of Congress represent.
Missouri lawmakers began that process on Tues. Mar. 9, but the process of drawing the maps has been complicated this year by the pandemic.
Missouri representatives said Tuesday, the redistricting process will take longer than usual. A lot longer. States were supposed to get the census data by December of last year. Instead, as Representative Dan Shaul says, the current estimated date is September 30 .
He’s a republican from Jefferson County and chairs the House Special Committee on Redistricting. He says the committee will holds essions over the fall to make up of the delays, and promised districts will be drawn with their populations in mind, not the members of congress already representing them. ....
