A stunning radio play adaptation of the 50-year-old debut novel by Toni Morrison, “The Bluest Eye,” is epitomized in this painting. Protagonist Pecola Breedlove “is obsessed with Shirley Temple and a desire to have blue eyes,” according to the Aurora Theatre Company. The play explores “the emotional depths of Black girlhood, the poisonous effects of racism, and the heartbreak of shame.”

'The Bluest Eye' is a deeply impactful audio experience

“The Bluest Eye,” commissioned by Aurora Theatre Company, is an audio drama adaptation of Toni Morrison’s 1970 novel of the same name. Adapted for the stage by Lydia R. Diamond and directed by Dawn Monique Williams, “The Bluest Eye” is a unique and spellbinding take on the novel’s themes of Black girlhood, family and trauma.
Unlike the novel, the audio drama has a multitude of narrators who each speak to their own experiences and the experiences of others. This artistic choice, made by Diamond, sets the audio drama apart from other adaptations, as it delivers a variety of complex perspectives and captivating voices. In an interview with the Daily Californian, Williams explained the significance of this narrative approach as a way of giving depth to the plot and to characters.  ....

Aurora Theatre presents an audio play of Toni Morrison's 'The Bluest Eye.'

The Bluest Eye, written by Nobel and Pulitzer award-winner Toni Morrison (1931–2019). Playwright Lydia R. Diamond’s faithful adaptation of Morrison’s first novel retains all of its power and pathos in this audio play, as well as a good deal of its lyrical flavor.
Set in 1940 in Morrison’s hometown of Lorain, Ohio, the story revolves around Pecola Breedlove (Jasmine Milan Williams,
Bull in a China Shop), a heartsick, lonely, and troubled 11-year-old Black girl who is shamed by what she is told is her ugliness. And she has constant reminders of her lack of worth. Neighbors taunt her; the local store owner will not look at her. ....
