USD 373 finds $1 million in unpaid insurance claims

The Kansan
It came as good news — more than $1.1 million in funds headed to Newton USD 373 from insurance companies from an insurance claim filed in 2016.
"That money is, of course, all earmarked," said David Decker, director of business services. "This is real damage that needs to be repaired. What we are happy about is this is something that will impact nearly all of our schools."
The insurance claim had gone dormant, and the claim had gone uninvestigated. Earlier this school year Chris Schaeffer, Director of Facilities, brought the dormant claim to the attention of district administration — who reopened the claim.

Educational Technology Center.
"That money will impact nearly all of our schools," said
David Decker, director of business services. ".... We will want to touch those buildings to get them upgrades and the fixes that they need. That is going to be money, again, that will help our facilities and give us some breathing room in our capital outlay."
Current administration is not sure why the claim was not approved in 2016, or why the claim was not moved forward by the school district at that time.
"That is incredibly disappointing to hear," said board member
Mallory Morton. "... This is a huge amount, prior to both bond issues we put out. What happened with it? Why did this go dormant? ... I am grateful this was discovered and handled appropriately this time. We need all that we can get at this time."

Following a special meeting to respond to an SB40 hearing, the Newton USD 373 Board of Education voted 6-0 to keep mask rules in place for students through the end of this school year.
"The board finds ... that a change in the mask policy at this time, so close to the end of school, would not be in the interest of students, staff or the community," said Mallory Morton, USD 373 Board of Education President while reading a prepared statement April 19.   ".. A continuation of the mask policy for the remainder of this school year through May 28, 2021, is narrowly taylored to address the COVID-19 health emergency and that masking the least restrictive alternative."

Andy Ortiz, a member of the Newton USD 373 Board of Education, and Clint McBroom, a member of the Newton City Commission, have lunch on at least a weekly basis. They talk about a lot — politics included.
But at the moment they are putting politics aside, creating a project together to help abandoned children at the U.S./Mexico border.
"Watching the news and what is going on, setting aside politics and biases to realize that there are kids down there that need help, I called Andy the other morning because he has connections down that way and asking what can we do to help," McBroom said.

The Newton USD 373 Board of Education voted 6-0 to appointed Dayna Steinmetz to the board of education during a special meeting Jan. 6.
"I like a lot of the things that she can bring to the table," said board member Mallory Morton. "... She has been a volunteer in the community for a very long time, which shows investment."
Steinmetz has a background in social work and work with nonprofits in the community.
She will take a position vacated by Jennifer Budde.
Budde and her husband made a decision this summer to move their children from the Newton school district to another school system. The board amended the agenda Monday to accept Budde's resignation, as she made her announcement during the board member comment portion of the meeting.
