MA COVID Risk Map: Red Zone Towns at 13 – NECN

NBC Universal, Inc.
The number of Massachusetts communities at the highest risk of coronavirus transmission dropped in half, nearly to single digits.
The town-by-town coronavirus data released Thursday showed 13 communities in the high-risk red zone, down from 26 last week. It's the fourth straight week the figure has declined; the most communities in the high risk "red zone" was in mid-January, when there were 229 cities and towns in it.

The town-by-town coronavirus risk data classifies communities' risk level on a scale from red, the highest, to grey, and is one of many metrics tracked by the state that had been showing the latest COVID surge subsiding, though others are also on the rise. Walk-In Vaccinations Increasingly Available

With Massachusetts on track to reach its target goal of 4.1 million people fully vaccinated by the beginning of June, the state will begin to reallocate its resources, Governor Charles D. Baker Jr. said at a press conference Monday morning, May 3.
The “harder-to-reach populations” will now be the target for the commonwealth.
“At this point, we’re adjusting our vaccine distribution strategy to be more targeted and will shift vaccines to smaller-scale operations that can focus on particular communities or particular populations,” Gov. Baker said.
These smaller-scale operations will include more doses for 22 regional collaborations, doubled allocation for the 20 most impacted communities and an increase in the number of mobile vaccination clinics.

“My mother is 80 years old, and since we were invited to a wedding in Florida, I took the trip for both of us to get vaccinated.
The story of this Venezuelan who prefers not to give her name is more and more common: that of travelers from Latin American countries who are vaccinated against the coronavirus in the United States.
“Everything was very simple. We just had to show our passport and they vaccinated us without even having to get out of the car at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami,” she told BBC News Mundo (Spanish news service of the BBC).

New Bedford mayor 'very concerned' about slow uptake of vaccine

NEW BEDFORD — Kevin Gallagher, chief of the Acushnet Fire Department, said earlier this week that the waterfront vaccine center on Hervey Tichon Avenue was empty and that there was no wait during his visit.
“Let’s face facts, empty sites usually get closed down sooner than later," he wrote in a Facebook post shared by more than 2,700 people. "Our hope is that you take advantage of this opportunity before it is lost. Ask anyone who has tried to schedule appointments on line or by phone. Nothing beats simply walking in.”
Mayor Jon Mitchell posted a video on Facebook a few days earlier during his visit to the center on April 25. At that point, the clinic only had 30 appointments remaining through the next four to five hours, and was "wide open" for walk-ins.

On Aug. 28, 1918, an outbreak of influenza was detected aboard a receiving ship at Boston's Commonwealth Pier. "Unless precautions are taken," wrote Dr. John S. Hitchcock of the Massachusetts Department of Health, "the disease in all probability will spread to the civilian population of the city." Despite the department's swift actions to contain the disease, it spread like wildfire, first through the maritime population and, by mid-September, to civilians.
In an effort to minimize the spread of the disease, state and city officials enacted measures that would be all too familiar to us today. Theaters, movie houses, saloons, and dance halls were closed. Public gatherings were prohibited. Citizens were advised to avoid unnecessary travel on streetcars, subways, and trains. Still, Boston hospitals overflowed with patients, and the situation became more desperate as the city's doctors and nurses themselves became infected with influenza.

Distribution Of Rabies Vaccine Baits To Resume

Residents of Bourne and the Upper Cape are being cautioned about the upcoming distribution of oral rabies vaccine baits north and west of the Cape Cod Canal. The Cape Cod and Southeast Massachusetts Rabies Task Force announced it will resume distribution of vaccine baits beginning Monday, May 3, through Friday, June 4.
Distribution of approximately 12,000 vaccine baits south and east of the canal will begin May 10. The baits will be distributed from the Cape Cod Canal through Route 151 in Falmouth, and routes 28 and 149 in Barnstable. The aim is to boost wildlife rabies vaccination rates and prevent the reemergence of raccoon rabies.
Beginning May 10, baits will be distributed in areas of Capeside Bourne and Sandwich, Falmouth and Barnstable. Baits will be distributed by vehicles, train and bait stations. Approximately 5,500 will be distributed by bait stations in selected areas. A majority of the baits will be distributed by town, county and USDA officials utilizing vehicles and helicopter.
