Freshman Representative Mondaire Jones, a New York Democrat, suggested that Republican lawmakers are engaging in racist activity by opposing statehood for Washington, D.C. and that they uphold systems of white supremacy.
Democrats and Republicans in Congress are currently debating whether D.C. should be granted statehood, with the House of Representatives approving statehood for the district in a party line vote on Thursday. Now the debate moves to the Senate, where Democrats hold only narrow control and are unlikely to pass the legislation without ending the legislative filibuster or pushing it through the budget reconciliation process. Washington, April 23 (IANS) The US House voted to pass a bill that would make Washington, D.C. the nation s 51st state, a Democratic priority that will face an uphill battle in the Senate for final passage even as the party controls both chambers of Congress.

Alaska Rep. Don Young advocates for Puerto Rico statehood

Alaska Republican Rep. Don Young has advocated for Puerto Rico statehood, a decision that defies fellow party members across the country and state.
Young said on Wednesday that the island’s statehood was long overdue.
“I think it’s time,” Young said. “As far as the plebiscites, we’ve had three of them. Each time we’ve actually been victorious, in the sense of being a state.”
The most recent plebiscite, or non-binding vote, on the island was in November. More than 52% of Puerto Ricans voted for statehood. But statehood requires congressional approval in order to happen.
Puerto Rico statehood scares many Republicans, who have said that it could ensure Democratic leadership in the Senate for decades, Alaska Public Media reported. ....
