Mark Lesko is set to become the Acting U.S. Attorney of the Eastern District of New York on March 19. His appointment follows U.S. Attorney Seth DuCharme’s announcement of resignation.
Lesko comes into the position as a longtime U.S. Attorney Assistant and former executive director of Accelerate Long Island, a coalition effort to foster biotech companies. He has also served as a three-time Brookhaven Town Supervisor.
DuCharme was appointed in July 2020 after being Attorney General William Barr’s counselor for nine months. He now plans to go into private practice.
During his short term, DuCharme created the Bank Integrity Task Force to investigate individuals and corporations using U.S. banks to launder money.

Environmentalists Laud Long Island Bill To Encourage Less Packaging Garbage

A proposed bill in New York plans to help Long Island with its ongoing solid waste management crisis. The region is still working on a plan on where to put its garbage once the Brookhaven Landfill is expected to close in 2024.
The legislation, still in its early stages, sets up an extended producer responsibility program to encourage manufacturers to limit the amount of packaging that is produced.
Scott Cassel is with the Product Stewardship Institute, an organization that looks to reduce the environmental impacts of consumer products. He explains how the program would work.
“It would mean that those that produce paper and packaging would actually have to fund the cost or a significant amount of the cost of recycling. And depending on how eco-friendly or how much of the material they would make, those producers would pay more into the system or less, depending on those factors,” Cassel said during a forum hosted by the New York League of Conservation Voters.

Long Island Clean Water Center Hopes Biofilters Are The Answer To Remove Harmful Chemical In Water

The New York State Center for Clean Water Technology plans to upgrade aging septic systems on Long Island with new nitrogen removing biofilters, or NRBs, that remove harmful contaminants at a higher rate.
Dr. Chris Gobler is the center’s director.
“If you attach an NRB to the end of that wastewater, we're reducing it by more than 60% and most importantly, in all cases, the effluent of our NRBs is less than one microgram per liter. That is the New York State drinking water standard. So the water is coming in above the standard, it's going through the NRB, and it's coming out below the standard,” Gobler said.

Suffolk Sheriff Begins Police Reform Listening Sessions As Nassau Submits Controversial Plan

Tuesday begins the first of two listening sessions this week for Long Islanders to weigh in on a state-mandated reform of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office.
Meanwhile, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran is expected to submit to county lawmakers this week her administration’s proposal on state-mandated police reforms.
Last summer, Governor Andrew Cuomo required every local police department in New York to adopt a plan to reform racial disparities in policing by April 1.
Cuomo said the future of state funding for police departments depends on those plans.
“You can't ignore the tension. Ignoring a problem will never solve the problem. That is true in life and that is true in society and that is true in government. So, put people at the table, let them vent their issues and they will vent, but then let's come to a collaborative and a consensus and let's move on,” Cuomo said.

Defund the police because society should reassess our values if Black lives really matter – The Statesman

Every time I see a blue lives matter flag wavering in the wake of a cruel Black death, my stomach begins to compress. I cannot help myself from tracing down the complicated, yet broken system that is law enforcement in this country.
Months of increased momentum of the Black Lives Matter movement, daily protests and thousands demanding justice for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and the long list of Black people who have been wrongfully killed, have led to many wanting the same thing — to defund the police.

Wind Energy Company Moves Forward With Large-Scale Long Island Offshore Program

Energy company Equinor plans to advance what New York Governor Andrew Cuomo calls the largest offshore wind program in the country off the coast of Long Island.
Developers this week say construction on the Empire Wind Farm project off of Long Beach is scheduled to begin in 2023.
The company also won approval in January to build two additional projects in Long Island waters, including the Empire Wind Farm 2.
Equinor spokesperson Julia Bovey said that would help the state meet its overall renewable energy goals.
“We have a total of $47 million in workforce development. And in New York, that can be innovation. It can be direct community benefits, job training, other ways that we can help speed the energy transition,” Bovey said.

Williams Elementary students received bicyces and little libraries

Williams Elementary School students received a bounty of attention and gifts from the community last Thursday just in time for Christmas.
Three Girl Scouts of the Gateway Council working on their Silver Award project built three “Little Library” boxes and filled them with books for first grade classes at Williams.
Earlier in the day, First Missionary Baptist Church gave 10 students brand new shiny bicycles.
The  girls in Girl Scout Troop 2387 of Gainesville have been working tirelessly on their  Silver Award literacy project. They built Little Libraries using wooden crates for their adopted first grade classes. The girls in the project, all freshmen in high school, are Kristen Cooper of P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School, Shanaya Brown of Gainesville High School and Rosemary Peine, who is homeschooled.
