3-year-old survives dog mauling in Southwest Alaska; mother says authorities have been slow to take action

Print article
A 3-year-old Chevak girl was badly hurt last week when loose dogs attacked her as she played outside her home.
Since the Sunday attack, Amaya Santillana has traveled to Bethel and Anchorage for treatment and undergone two surgeries, said her mother, LaVerna Paniyak.
Charges had not been filed against the neighbor who she said owns the dogs, although the investigation is open and Alaska State Troopers are seeking witnesses, said Austin McDaniel, a spokesman for the troopers.
It’s unclear what will happen to the dogs. Troopers have no authority over local animal control issues and cannot interfere in decisions about the dogs, McDaniel said.

Uncovering the Career of a Maya Ambassador - Archaeology Magazine

EL PALMAR, GUATEMALA—
UC Riverside News reports that a team led by archaeologist Kenichiro Tsukamoto has unearthed a temple platform and a burial at the site of El Palmar that shed light on the life and times of an eighth-century A.D. Maya “lakam,” or standard-bearer, who served as an ambassador. Hieroglyphs on a temple stairway at El Palmar record that in September of A.D. 726, the ambassador Ajpach’ Waal traveled to the city of Copan, more than 300 miles from El Palmar. There, in what must have been a diplomatic coup, he brokered an alliance between the king of Copan and the king of Calakmul, a Maya city near El Palmar. Under the temple floor the team found the burial of a man with two clay pots, presumably Ajpach’ Waal himself. Study of his remains revealed some surprises. “His life is not like we expected based on the hieroglyphics,” said Tsukamoto. “Many people say that the elite enjoyed their lives, but the story is usually more complex.” Among many maladies, Ajpach’ Waal suffered from arthritis, perhaps caused in part by his ceremonial role carrying banners between cities separated by harsh terrain. In his lifetime, the emissary also saw the alliance he engineered between Copan and Calakmul collapse, and he likely died in reduced circumstances. To read about a royal Maya tomb unearthed in Guatemala, go to “Tomb of the Vulture Lord.”

Survey Analyzes Community Views on Policing in Medford and Somerville
While community residents express some satisfaction, they see inequalities and opportunity for change according to survey by Tufts professor and students

Residents of Medford and Somerville, Massachusetts are somewhat satisfied with policing in their communities-although satisfaction is lower among residents of color-and favor creating civilian review boards, deploying more resources for social services workers to respond to certain types of crises, and eliminating certain policing tactics, according to a survey by a Tufts University professor and a group of student researchers.
“In Medford and Somerville, we found that residents perceive inequalities in how residents are treated based on race and ethnicity,” said Brian Schaffner, Newhouse Professor of Civic Studies at Tufts’ Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life and Department of Political Science in Tufts’ School of Arts and Sciences. “And these perceptions can have important consequences-like, for example, many residents of color reporting that they would feel uncomfortable calling police if they need help.”

NASA Images Reveal Important Forests and Wetlands are Disappearing in Belize

NASA Images Reveal Important Forests and Wetlands are Disappearing in Belize
AUSTIN, Texas – Using NASA satellite images and machine learning, researchers with The University of Texas at Austin have mapped changes in the landscape of northwestern Belize over a span of four decades, finding significant losses of forest and wetlands, but also successful regrowth of forest in established conservation zones that protect surviving structures of the ancient Maya.
The research serves as a case study for other rapidly developing and tropical regions of the globe, especially in places struggling to balance forest and wetland conservation with agricultural needs and food security.

Habib Koite amp Bamada - Baro (13 tracks) +Album Reviews +Used CD available for Swap

| 05/24/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)
"Mali is a country near the West Coast of Africa & home to many talented world-class musicians. Habib Koite & his band, Bamada, are among this elite group. This CD consists of *ALL* original compositions and songs written by the artist. The music is ambient, soothing, soulful and very pleasing. It is played on both modern and traditional instruments, making it very authentic. The acoustic guitar, flute, bass guitar, combine with the African instruments, calabassa, kamali ngoni, caragnan, tamani, tamamba, guiro, dum dum & balafon. The Mali language sounds poetic and lyrical ... translations to the songs in the liner notes gives us a cultural perspective to the words & music. We learn that "tere" is a form of superstition that applies to women. Habib sings and asks if men also have "tere", which refers to being given a "sign" or "message". In the song, "No More Cigarette", one wonders if Habib is writing a 'protest' song against the tobacco industry. In effect, foreign countries have created a costly habit which infects the youth of Mali ... We learn that "Baro" is a form of teasing or arguing, a custom of certain ethnic groups in Mali. It is allowed in long-standing relationships where harmony and peaceful coexistence occurs. Habib provides a very delightful song about this custom. We are told "takambes" is a dance from Northern Mali which demonstrates grace and beauty, as a symbol for love, friendship, faithfulness. Habib creates music for this type of movement. The listener feels the message through the harmonies and rhythms created by the instruments & voices. This CD transcends cultures and has universal appeal. The music is uninhibited, lyrical and poetic. Erika B. (erikab93)"
