JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Tribune News Service) It was a spring day on patrol in 2004 when 22-year-old U.S. Marine Cpl. Jason Dunham and his squad spotted an ambush in Karabilah, Iraq, and ran to help.
Dunham, on his first posting out of Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, used his body and helmet to cover an exploding grenade and saved his squad before dying eight days later from his injuries.
On Sunday May 20, Dunham s name will race at Charlotte Motor Speedway atop the windshield of NASCAR driver Kurt Busch s No. 1 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet Camaro at the Coca-Cola 600. But on Monday, Busch unveiled that 550-hp race car next to another vehicle that also bears Dunham s name the 105,000 horsepower USS Jason Dunham. ....

The last surviving Marine of the USS Indianapolis, the U.S. Navy ship that sank in July 1945, died this weekend.
Edgar Harrell was 96 and lived at the Tennessee State Veterans Home in Clarksville, Tennessee, the official Facebook page of the ship posted Saturday.
Harrell was one of 316 crew members who survived the attack by Japanese forces, waiting for help in shark-infested waters for four days.MORE: Oldest survivor of USS Indianapolis has died at 98

Good News: Greenscape of Jacksonville plants trees at Cuba Hunter Park

Greenscape of Jacksonville launched its effort to plant 15 trees in Cuba Hunter Park on the city s Southside on Saturday.
The project will be continued with volunteers, but the weekend planting was accomplished with the group s board of directors taking on the task. Its members were ready to get their hands a little dirty and set an example for other tree-planting volunteers, said

Engine manufacturer Fairbanks Morse has opened a 8,000-square-foot Mayport Service Center in Jacksonville Beach, Fla., as part of the company’s aim to expedite aftermarket services to military and commercial maritime customers across the U.S.
The facility represents a $350,000 investment and places Fairbanks Morse in closer proximity to core customers such as Mayport Naval Station, Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, and other U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard installations, the company said.
