Halifax Health They say that they ve exceeded their peak of Covid-19 cases by 40% and of those who are in the hospital admitted right now 90% are unvaccinated.
NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. - The pandemic of the unvaccinated is real and it is on display at Halifax Health Medical Center. The Volusia County hospital network announced they have exceeded their peak COVID-19 hospitalizations by 40%. Of those admitted, 90% are unvaccinated. The delta variant is the most common strain found in patients. 
It appears to be more viral and creating more severe disease in any given age, especially in the unvaccinated, said Chief Medical Officer Dr. Margaret Crossman.  ....

Florida ends January with record-high new COVID cases and deaths


Coronavirus kicked into full gear in January, resulting in Florida s highest increase in COVID-19 cases and deaths since the pandemic began.
The state reported 382,026 new coronavirus cases in January. That’s a 10% increase from the 345,762 cases reported in December, now the second-highest increase in cases, and a 20% increase from the 317,952 cases reported in July, once considered the peak of the pandemic. 
Florida reported 4,589 new coronavirus deaths in January. That’s a 5% increase from the 4,344 new deaths reported in July, the only other month to exceed 4,000 deaths. 
This includes holiday shopping, increased travel, family gatherings and short timing between Christmas and New Years gatherings.  ....

A Year of COVID-19: What we've learned in 2020


Starting in March, when Florida had its first case of the virus in Tampa, families lost loved ones, people lost jobs, students transitioned to online learning and then back to the classroom, and long-term care facilities went into lockdown.  
For weeks, finding toilet paper at the local grocery store was nearly impossible. Cleaning supplies were wiped out. In Florida, the lack of supplies made it seem like a Category 5 hurricane was about to sweep across the state. 
Wearing face masks while around other people is now the norm, social distancing has become a mostly accepted practice, and so is frequent hand-washing.  ....

Halifax Health receives its first doses of COVID vaccine


DAYTONA BEACH There was applause on Wednesday in the Emergency Room at Halifax Health Medical Center, as the first dose of a coronavirus vaccine was administered to a member of the hospital’s medical staff.
A little after noon, Dr. Kent Harman, the hospital’s director of Intensive Care Services, rolled up his right sleeve for a .5mL injection of the Moderna coronavirus vaccine as a dozen or so hospital officials, frontline medical workers and media watched.
“It has been a long several months since March,” Harman said. “We’re very encouraged to have a vaccine that we know is effective.” ....
