Alisha Kerlin experiments with paint, words and junk mail inside Las Vegas' ASAP space

Alisha Kerlin at ASAP
Alisha Kerlin is a shining star in the Las Vegas art scene. As the executive director of UNLV’s Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art, she leads one of Nevada’s most important arts organizations. And yet, her success in showing others’ art has mostly kept her too busy to make her own.
“I’m around art a lot. I live and work around it,” Kerlin says. “And I haven’t made a solo project since I became a director and a mother in the same year.”
That was half a decade ago.
So when ASAP (Available Space Art Projects), located in New Orleans Square inside Commercial Center, offered Kerlin its space for the last week in February, she jumped at the chance to make and show new work. In a 1968 speech, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “We shall overcome because the arc of the moral universe is long but it bends toward justice.” Those words, inspired by 19th-century abolitionist Theodore Parker, are engraved on the South Wall of King’s Washington, D.C., memorial. Barack Obama often quoted them, and even had them woven into an Oval Office rug. And now, North Las Vegas’ Left of Center Art Gallery has themed a new art show around them.

“With the new collaborations we are forming with 516 Arts a contemporary art museum in Albuquerque and other regional institutions, this postponement also gives us time to strengthen our partnerships in this region, broadening the reach of this exhibition across New Mexico and beyond.” ....
