The pandemic has forced about 50 of the province’s 200 sugar shacks to shut down. The others have all recorded decreases in revenue.
In a genius effort to save this beloved industry, 70 sugar shack owners got together and launched, in February, Ma cabane à la maison. The idea was simple: allow people to order online from one of the participating sugar shacks and have the cabane à sucre experience at home. Last week, it was revealed that 110,000 kits had been sold, representing 500,000 meals. Ma cabane à la maison injected more than $11 million into Quebec regional economies and helped save the sugar shack industry. We did it! For the love of maple syrup, we showed solidarity and saved a tradition whose loss would be unthinkable. ....

I remember first hearing of Azerbaijan back in 1990, when I read headlines about the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict with Armenia. For weeks, maybe months, Canadian correspondents joined international ones reporting from Baku, Azerbaijan’s capital.
Over the years, I’ve not kept up with events in the former Soviet republic, at least, not enough. But when I found out in 2017 that Azerbaijan was to hold its first Formula One Grand Prix, one of only 32 countries to do so, I marvelled. Good for Baku, I thought. It’s back in the news, but as host of a prestigious international event, not the scene of conflict. ....
