The battery storage market in the UK has become a viable investment opportunity in just the past few months, even without the backing of long-term contracts for grid services, according to an investment manager in the renewable energy sector.
Jonty Lovell, investment manager at Foresight Group, said that the falling cost of energy storage and the evolution of an industry capable of monetising assets in merchant opportunities have brought the industry into a new phase of economic viability. MONUMENT RE ACQUIRES VARIABLE ANNUITY PORTFOLIO FROM ATHORA IRELAND PLC.
Monument Re announced today that, subject to necessary Irish High Court and regulatory approvals, it has agreed to acquire the closed-block portfolio of variable annuities from Athora Ireland plc, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Athora Holding Ltd. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Energy market mechanisms must evolve in order to support long-duration energy storage, with the existing frameworks having “significant problems” incentivising those technologies, a panel of experts has concluded.
Speaking on a panel debating the policy landscape for long-duration storage at the ongoing Energy Storage Summit 2021, organised by
Energy-Storage.news publisher Solar Media, Robert Hull, managing director at energy advisory Riverswan and formerly managing director of UK energy market regulator Ofgem, highlighted how while overall policy remains supportive of long-duration energy storage technologies, revenue-generating mechanisms are failing to live up to that promise. ....
