Netizen Voices: Hu Xijin’s Taliban Friendship Comments Criticized
Posted by Joseph Brouwer | Jul 12, 2021
A Taliban spokesperson’s claim that China is a “friend” incited an online furore after nationalist Chinese media figures shared the statement approvingly. “We have been to China many times and we have good relations with them,” the Taliban spokesperson said, adding that “China is a friendly country that we welcome for reconstruction and developing Afghanistan.” Guancha, a nationalist website financed by the venture capitalist Eric X. Li, published a report on the spokesperson’s statements. Hu Xijin, the editor-in-chief of Global Times, shared Guancha’s article on Weibo as an example of China’s diplomatic prowess: “China’s line has made us Kabul’s friend, while the Taliban also take us for friends. The most important thing is we will forever be Afghanistan’s friends.”

A global network of private factories that Russia is relying on to supply its Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine to international markets is months away from reaching full production levels, raising doubts over Moscow’s ability to honour dozens of agreements with foreign countries.
The Kremlin funded the development of Sputnik V but lacks the production capacity to make enough of it, meaning Russia must now depend on factories in Brazil, India and South Korea if it is going to meet a target of vaccinating almost one-tenth of the world’s population.

Spread of new Covid strains has made it even more urgent to launch rapid vaccination drives in poorer countries

On a balmy day in January on the outskirts of Pune, a city of three million people in Maharashtra state, women in saris are sitting on plastic chairs under a humming fan waiting for their first shot of Covishield as the Oxford/AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine is known in India.
Wearing a white doctor’s coat, Dr Varsha Gaekwad, who is overseeing the first immunisations of frontline healthcare workers in the country of nearly 1.4 billion people, says it will take time for the general public to gain confidence in the vaccine. “Once the health workers are going ahead with it, that means it’s 100% safe,” she says. “That is what the community will see.”..

In mid-December 2020, when British foreign secretary Dominic Raab visited India, he made it a point to highlight India’s vital role in the international response to the COVID-19 pandemic. India, he noted, supplied more than 50% of the world’s vaccines, and 25% of the generic drugs used in the UK’s £120-billion-a-year National Health Service.
A week, it is said, is a long time in politics, and in the fortnight since that visit, much has happened. The British prime minister’s visit to India, that Raab was preparing the ground for, stands cancelled, and a media storm has swirled around the hasty and allegedly premature approval by Indian regulators of the vaccine candidates developed by two of India’s leading bio-pharma manufacturers: the Serum Institute in Pune and Bharat Biotech in Hyderabad.
