The $60 billion industry fund has made the appointment as it looks to build on its “ambitious” internalisation program to shift investment management in-house in 2022.
Stephen Howard will join HESTA as general manager for defensives. Mr Howard brings more than 20 years’ experience in financial services to the role, including over 10 years at Vanguard where he held the role of APAC head of fixed income and “significantly and strongly” increased FUM.
“Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic we’ve witnessed first-hand the critical role health care providers play within our community. I’m thrilled to be joining HESTA and to have the opportunity to help our members achieve their investment and retirement savings goals,” Mr Howard said. ....

Sonya Sawtell-Rickson, HESTA chief investment officer (CIO), said his appointment would continue to build on the internalisation program that would see management of fixed interest and cash begin to shift in-house in 2022.
“Stephen will be leading the next phase of our internalisation journey, as we move to internally manage fixed interest and cash instruments,” Sawtell-Rickson said.

Dai-ichi Life Insurance decided to make an impact investment of ¥100 million ($960,540) in Metcela, a Japanese startup engaging in the development of regenerative medicines for patients with chronic heart failure.
This investment is part of the company’s ESG investment programme. According to its latest annual report, the insurer aims, by 2023, to double its total ESG investments from ¥1.37 trillion ($13.16 billion) in 2019. Dai-ichi Life had ¥36.8 trillion in total assets as of September 2020.

The National Pension Service committed a total of $450 million to two North America-focused funds launched by Stonepeak Infrastructure Partners and Macquarie Infrastructure Partners.

HESTA reveals new General Manager Portfolio Construction and Risk

HESTA today announced Michael Sommers has been appointed as the new General Manager Portfolio Construction & Risk, joining the Fund’s redefined investment leadership structure.
Chief Investment Officer (CIO) Sonya Sawtell-Rickson said the appointment will enhance the delivery of the $56-billion Fund’s investment strategy to keep delivering strong, long-term returns.
“Strengthening our portfolio construction and risk management is key to our overall investment strategy that aims to continue delivering competitive, long-term investment performance for our 870,000-plus members,” Ms Sawtell-Rickson said.
“With over 20 years’ experience in financial services, Michael has a proven track record in portfolio construction, derivative and alternatives strategies and risk management that will complement the skills and capabilities of our existing Investment team talent.
