Granholm calls for Senate action on MEGA credits

EAST LANSING, MI – Governor Granholm uses her weekly radio address to call on the state Senate to boost the number of tax credits her administration can use to attract businesses and jobs.

The governor says business recruitment efforts could stall without more Michigan Economic Growth Authority or MEGA tax credits. The MEGA board has nearly reached its limit, and won t be able to award new business tax credits until next year.
Governor Granholm says that would leave Michigan at a disadvantage in the fierce competition for jobs.
Tax credits that are approved by the MEGA board help Michigan compete with other states and even foreign countries for new companies or the expansion of present businesses, she says. ....

Since former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm was appointed as U.S. Secretary of Energy, she has made many comments about creating clean energy jobs.
“So what we need to do is to make sure that all parts of the country and their leaders understand that this clean energy economy, that reducing carbon emissions, is a job creator for every corner of the nation,” Granholm said in an interview with National Public Radio. “So even in coal country, even in gas and oil country, there’s an opportunity for jobs. . In 2010, Michigan’s economy was reeling. The Great Recession had hit the state hard and U.S. automakers were struggling to survive. Seeking to ease the pain, state officials authorized tax credits under the Michigan Economic Growth Authority (MEGA) program as part of long-term deals with distressed automakers. But the program did not include fiscal protections to control the state’s costs. This would prove to be a damaging misstep years later when Michigan had to close a multi-million dollar budget gap with spending cuts after automakers began claiming credits in larger amounts than expected.
How did this happen? When developing the agreements, the state relied on unrealistic estimates of the number of jobs the companies would create and the salaries they would pay. The companies hired more workers at higher than anticipated salaries, qualifying for more tax credits and driving costs higher than expected. Fortunately, such situations can be avoided. ....
