Letter of the week: Climate rebels' successes

In reply to Louise Perry’s column (Out of the Ordinary, 23 April) I would like to point out that there is a climate emergency. Extinction Rebellion (XR) does not aim to win a popularity contest, it aims to be effective. Many of its activists have spent years signing petitions, writing to politicians, engaging in wildlife projects and going on authorised marches. This has laid the groundwork for our protests. Since the actions of XR and Fridays For Future there is far more public awareness of climate change. It’s still not nearly enough but I count it as a success. She states that “few people are willing to make the kind of sacrifice demanded to reduce their carbon footprint to almost zero”. This is not borne out by the conclusions of citizens’ assemblies held last year by six government departments. We need governments to enable us to make changes, and I would not consider it a sacrifice if I could breathe clean air and ride my bike safely instead of vying for spa ....

Barbados opener Zachary McCaskie is excited about the opportunity granted to him to play for Middlesex County Cricket Club. The county commenced on April 12 and ends in September.
The 24-year-old right-handed batsman said his chance was made possible thanks to former legendary West Indies opening batsman Desmond Haynes and the Barbados Cricket Association vice-president Calvin Hope.
The elated former Christ Church Foundation student who has played two seasons for Barbados explained what it meant to him.
“My performances have to be up to a particular standard for the county to be fully interested in me. So, I have to ensure I help them however I can and that is the best way for me to elevate. ....

Despite the insurmountable pressure to walk in his father’s footsteps, Mali Richards, son of cricketing legend Sir Vivian Richards, says it was a joy to have him as a father.
Many children of sports legends have felt the pressure put on by society due to their parents’ fame, but Richards, who is now making a name for himself as a cricket commentator, says it is a joy being the son of a national hero.
“It’s thoroughly enjoyable to be honest. Just looking back at it, it’s always been fun. We have had a few negatives that go along with that, but more often than not, it’s been very exciting and I enjoy being the son of Viv Richards,” said Richards. ....

In 2003 and at the age of 19,
Mali Richards, broke a long-standing scoring record in the Leeward Islands Cricket Tournament, hitting 319 for Antigua and Barbuda against a combined US & British Virgin Islands.
The effort eclipsed the previous record of 318, which was held by Alex Adams of Anguilla and placed much attention on the young Antiguan and son of successful former West Indies captain and batsman, Sir
Viv Richards.
Many thought this was the beginning of what would have been a fruitful regional and international career for the young Richards. He however went on to score only 376 First Class runs in 18 matches between 2004 and 2014. ....
