Victims of Midland-area flood are still struggling a year later

The Midland-area flood in May 2020 destroyed homes, businesses, and roads after two dams collapsed.
Mike Callan lost everything but his life when a dike at the Edenville Dam near Midland collapsed in May 2020 and unleashed a rush of water that displaced about 10,000 residents.
The ensuing flood turned roads into rivers and destroyed bridges, homes, and businesses. Callan’s two-story farmhouse, which he calls his “dream house,” was destroyed.
“Within a matter of minutes, it was gone,” Callan said. “I have nothing to show for it but a big debt.” ....

Hydroelectric dam owner Boyce Hydro Power, LLC has been fined millions for safety violations after dam failures caused catastrophic floods near Midland.
On Thursday, April 15, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) announced a $15 million penalty against Boyce Hydro Power for violating “numerous FERC staff orders and license provisions addressing safety of project facilities and surrounding communities.” ....

Amanda Nguyen ’13 posted an Instagram video in early February calling on journalists to cover the recent wave of violence against Asian Americans, who have been falsely blamed for the spread of COVID-19 after some conservatives, including former President Donald Trump, began referring to it as the “China virus.” Nguyen’s video went viral and its impact went as far as President Biden, who denounced the violence in his first prime-time presidential address a month later.
That video was the starting point for Friday’s virtual JFK Jr. Forum discussion, “Protecting the Civil Rights of Asian Americans,” between Nguyen and CBS News senior White House correspondent Weijia Jiang. Jiang was one of the journalists who was originally tagged, and she asked White House press secretary Jen Psaki whether Biden had seen the video. (She wasn’t aware that he had, but promised that that he would address anti-Asian discrimination.) ....
