A brief history of the beloved state tradition
Wisconsin didn’t invent fried fish, but they certainly have made the Friday fish fry a cultural imperative. Few restaurants, taverns, or supper clubs or for that matter, church basements skip the tradition during Lent, the Christian 40-day period of preparation for Easter, but the meal has taken on a life of its own. Let me explain.
From the early days of Christianity, Fridays were considered days of abstinence out of respect toward the crucifixion of Christ. In the 9th century, Pope Nicholas I made it specifically a meat issue. Fish who may be offended they don’t rate as flesh were still allowed, as they weren’t the meat of a warm-blooded animal. Ergo, they became a favored Friday protein source. No, the fish allowance wasn’t a secret deal between the Vatican and Big Fish. Still, it doesn’t explain the frying. ....

ST. LOUIS Schnuck Markets, Inc. has announced the launch of an initiative to find local suppliers and expand the presence of their products in Schnucks stores throughout the Midwest.
Schnucks merchandising leaders will be working to identify those suppliers that are located within 125 miles of a Schnucks store or in one of the four states served by Schnucks. To accomplish this, Schnucks is partnering with RangeMe, the leading online platform that streamlines new product discovery between suppliers and retailers.
“Our emphasis on local products connects us with the many communities throughout the areas we serve and introduces our customers to local treasures that can be found right in their own backyard,” said Schnucks Deli Category Manager Andy DeCou. “Our communities depend on local businesses and they depend on us to get their goods into the hands of customers.” ....

WELLINGTON, Kan. (AP) The carcass of an American alligator was recently found in a south-central Kansas river, and wildlife officials speculate the animal was likely being kept as a pet before being released into the wild when it got too big to keep.
A Kansas Department of Transportation worker recently discovered the carcass in the Ninnescah River in Sumner County as he worked along the river bank, Kansas City television station WDAF reported.
A zoologist determined the reptile, which is native to the southeastern U.S., was about 3 years old. ....

Only slight flooding chances are forecast for the Mississippi and Illinois rivers this spring, according to an outlook by the National Weather Service.Hearst Illinois
The chance of significant spring flooding especially for the devastating level of last year is low this year, according to a yearly outlook by the National Weather Service.
Its Spring Flood and Water Resources Outlook said minor flooding is expected along the Mississippi, Missouri and Illinois rivers. Chances of major flooding, however, are projected at below 5%, with most local streams having a near-normal risk.
The Mississippi and Illinois rivers are experiencing near-normal streamflow for this time of year, according to the weather service. ....
