Critical Infrastructure: Solar carports anchor microgrids at facilities that need them most

The basic purpose of a microgrid is to island the user facility be it a hospital or fire station from the utility grid when brown-outs or black-outs are at play (which are becoming more common). While the regulated utilities claim a need for state approval for billions of dollars worth of grid improvements to avoid these outages both planned and unplanned such improvements, if approved, are not likely to be evenly distributed.
Utility grid “investments are unlikely to be made in areas with low population density but that are likely high risk for outages. This type of situation could be aptly addressed by DER (distributed energy resources), within microgrids or as standalone resources,” observes a February 2021 report from the California Energy Commission on DER planning. ....

CEC EPIC report highlights research making grid more resilient & reliable
The California Energy Commission’s (CEC) latest annual report on the Electric Program Investment Charge (EPIC) program highlights how public-interest research is helping California meet its goal of decarbonizing the electrical system by 2045.
EPIC is California’s premier clean energy research and development program. Each year, more than $130 million in EPIC funding is invested in projects that advance the environmental sustainability, reliability, and affordability of the electric system.
EPIC funds are competitively awarded to support the most promising technologies and approaches across six investment areas: the entrepreneurial ecosystem; resilience and safety; building decarbonization; grid decarbonization and decentralization; industrial and agricultural innovation; and low-carbon transportation. EPIC invests in technologies at every stage of development, progressing them from the lab ....

Biden to Issue Infrastructure Plan. What Role Will Microgrids Play?

President Joe Biden is expected to release an infrastructure plan this month that sounds ready-made for microgrids. His goal, he said, is to make infrastructure “more climate resilient” to achieve “cheaper and cleaner” transport.
Although microgrids seem like a perfect match for Biden’s plan, it’s uncertain how much they will play into it. Washington is well aware of solar, wind and energy storage, but microgrids, not so much. The technology, as used today, is still relatively new to the game. So microgrids don’t seem to be high on Biden’s radar. At least, he’s not using the term much, so far, when he talks about clean energy. ....
