Netflix’s ‘History of Swear Words’ Rightfully Acknowledges The Influence Of Black Women In Music Two episodes highlight the impact of Black culture, and even more so Black women, in reclaiming five-letter words to our advantage. Netflix’s ‘History of Swear Words,’ the short comedic docuseries hosted by actor Nicholas Cage, comprises six different episodes centered around exactly what the title entails: the history behind some of the most popular four (and even five) letter words. Interestingly enough, two of the episodes briefly highlight the impact of Black culture, and even more so Black women, reclaiming those words and using them to our advantage.
This romp through the history of swearing is mainly limited to the United States and could have done with a bit more bite and depth The most difficult thing about writing this review was how to refer to the six unprintable words that actor Nicolas Cage dissects through the course of this documentary series. The series showed the way with “minced oaths,” which is using a proxy for the curse word. So the series looks at fudge, shoot, the nickname for Richard, lady dog, cat and darn — managed who hoo! It looks like Netflix will be starting off the new year with a bang, following its trailer release for its upcoming show about the origins of some of the English language’s most used swear words. And the best part? Nicolas Cage will be the host.
Sounds kind of brilliant, doesn’t it? History of Swear Words is the new comedy series that will delve into some of the most offensive words, exploring their origins, usage, and overall cultural impact.
Alongside host Cage, there will be a handful of comedy talent, including Jim Jefferies, Sarah Silverman, DeRay Davis, Open Mike Eagle, and Baron Vaughn. Experts will include linguist Charity Hudley, cognitive scientist Benjamin Bergen, and professor of feminist studies, Mireille Miller-Young.
