8 new cases of COVID-19 reported in Nova Scotia on Thursday

Nova Scotia Health's labs completed 2,969 tests Wednesday  — the most done in a day since early December.
"You can see from today's numbers that the cases are ticking up. And so, let me remind all Nova Scotians of the importance of testing," said Premier Iain Rankin in a news release, encouraging everyone to get tested regardless of whether they have symptoms.
One person is currently hospitalized in intensive care related to COVID-19.
The province is increasing its testing capacity, as there have been several cases in the past few weeks in which Public Health has not been able to find a source of infection, a trend Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Robert Strang called "increasingly concerning."

Bernice Burns, 82, was the first person to get the COVID-19 vaccine at the prototype clinic in the IWK Health Centre on Monday morning.(CBC)
The first prototype clinic for vaccinating people 80 and older in Nova Scotia against COVID-19 is up and running in Halifax this morning at the IWK Health Centre.
Bernice Burns, 82, was the first one to get a shot at 8 a.m.
"It's an honour really, it really is," Burns said after rolling up her sleeve for the vaccination. "I was very excited when they called me."
Burns said she won't necessarily be going out more until everyone else also has the vaccine. Maybe when she gets the second dose she'll feel safer, she said, but that doesn't mean she'll start ducking any public health rules.

Nova Scotia reports two new cases of COVID-19; community vaccine clinics to begin next week

HALIFAX --
Health officials in Nova Scotia are reporting two new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, as the number of active cases in the province has increased to 15.
One of Friday's new cases was identified in the province's Central zone and is a close contact of a previously reported case.
The other case was identified in the province's Eastern zone and is related to travel outside of Atlantic Canada.
"Since our last update we have seen case numbers slightly creep up, including cases with unknown sources in both Beaver Bank and New Minas. Both cases are still under investigation and we are ramping up testing in those communities," said Dr. Robert Strang, N.S. Chief Medical Officer of Health at Friday's news update.

Nine people were arrested Wednesday after the RCMP raided five unlicensed cannabis dispensaries in the Halifax area.
Police say they seized a "significant quantity" of cannabis, cannabis products and cash from the dispensaries on Caldwell Road in Cole Harbour.
The businesses operated on land that is part of the Millbrook First Nation.
RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Lisa Croteau said the businesses had previously refused to voluntarily cease operations.
"Nova Scotia RCMP is continuing to employ a measured approach, which includes consultation with the stakeholders, to address the unlicensed sale of cannabis in the community," Croteau said in an emailed statement.
