In January 2020, at the start of the COVID-19 outbreak, Denmark’s newspaper
Jyllands-Posten published a cartoon featuring China’s flag with virus-like illustrations in place of stars. The Chinese embassy in Denmark, in response, called the Danish newspaper’s satire “a humiliation to China and Chinese people,” saying that it showed no sympathy and empathy.
Denmark, on the other hand, refused to apologize, and its Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen retorted that the country had freedom of expression and was sticking to its core democratic values. Other Danish politicians and Danes on Twitter supported the paper’s right to publish such content.

With anti-terror law, red-tagged campus press struggle to report during pandemic

With anti-terror law, red-tagged campus press struggle to report during pandemic

Under the COVID-19 pandemic and the passage of the anti-terror law, the threats to campus publications take on a greater severity and pose serious challenges to student journalists' reportage.
This is on top of campus publications already being subjected to attacks and suppression, even by their own school administrations. The College Editors Guild of the Philippines (CEGP) has recorded almost 1,000 violations against campus press freedom since 2010.
Heightened harassment, red-tagging
Aside from universities, student publications are among the targets of the government’s red-tagging spree, after several were described as legal fronts of the communist movement without basis.

How can campus journalists strengthen their role as community watchdogs?
At a time when disinformation is rampant on social media platforms, several journalists suggested ways for campus publications to harness their role as truth-tellers during the last day of the Caloocan Young Leaders Initiative's (CYLI) online seminar-workshop on Saturday, March 27.
While campus publications often report stories on campus issues, resource persons at the Kalookan Para sa Kampus Midya" seminar-workshop showed student journalists how they can become megaphones of their respective communities as well.

Rappler CEO Maria Ressa and reporter Rambo Talabong went to court on Thursday, March 11, for a scheduled arraignment in a cyber libel case filed against them in connection with a Rappler investigative story that exposed a "thesis-for-sale" scam.
Through counsel Theodore Te, both asked the Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 24 to reconsider its earlier decision not to dismiss the case. The motion prompted a rescheduling of the arraignment to April 8.
This is the 10th criminal case filed by the Philippine government against Ressa, 3 of which – this one included – are related to cyber libel.

"Thanks very much to all my friends. I'm OK. I'm safe," said Kitazumi after leaving the police station in the city's Sanchaung district.

Journalists, educators urge student press to fight disinformation in campuses

Journalists, educators urge student press to fight disinformation in campuses

How important is the role of campus journalists in the fight against disinformation?
In an online national conference on democracy and disinformation hosted by the University of the Philippines (UP) Visayas on Monday, February 22, media practitioners and educators highlighted the significance of campus journalism in preserving democracy given the current online landscape.
At a time when red-tagging has been used to attack universities and campuses, UP Diliman journalism professor Ma Diosa Labiste said there was a need for "counterspeech."
“We have to create counterspeech or a speech that refutes hate speech, disinformation, fake news, or dangerous speech,” Labiste said.

Ex-workers sue SunStar Cagayan de Oro for alleged labor violations
Feb 22, 2021 9:36 PM PHT
Bobby Lagsa
SunStar Cagayan de Oro and
Super Balita Cagayan de Oro have filed labor complaints against their former employers.
Both news media outlets, which ceased most of their operations on June 30, 2020, were owned by SunStar Publishing Incorporated with headquarters in Cebu City.
The former employees filed complaints with the National Labor Relations Commission Region 10 on February 9 for alleged illegal dismissal, nonpayment and underpayment of salaries, holiday benefits, service incentive leave, and 13th month pay, among others.
They also accused SunStar of neglect for its supposed nonpayment of employees' insurance coverages and non-remittance of their SSS, Pag-IBIG, and PhilHealth contributions since February 2019.
