Rappler CEO Maria Ressa and reporter Rambo Talabong went to court on Thursday, March 11, for a scheduled arraignment in a cyber libel case filed against them in connection with a Rappler investigative story that exposed a thesis-for-sale scam.
Through counsel Theodore Te, both asked the Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 24 to reconsider its earlier decision not to dismiss the case. The motion prompted a rescheduling of the arraignment to April 8.
This is the 10th criminal case filed by the Philippine government against Ressa, 3 of which – this one included – are related to cyber libel. ....

Myanmar police released a Japanese freelance journalist on Friday, February 26, after briefly detaining him during a protest in the commercial capital of Yangon, Radio Free Asia showed in a livestream on Facebook.
The arrest of Yuki Kitazumi, who runs a media production company in the city and used to be a journalist with the
Nikkei business daily, was the first detention of a foreign reporter since the February 1 military coup.

How important is the role of campus journalists in the fight against disinformation?
In an online national conference on democracy and disinformation hosted by the University of the Philippines (UP) Visayas on Monday, February 22, media practitioners and educators highlighted the significance of campus journalism in preserving democracy given the current online landscape. 
At a time when red-tagging has been used to attack universities and campuses, UP Diliman journalism professor Ma Diosa Labiste said there was a need for counterspeech.   
“We have to create counterspeech or a speech that refutes hate speech, disinformation, fake news, or dangerous speech,” Labiste said.  ....

Ex-workers sue SunStar Cagayan de Oro for alleged labor violations

SunStar Cagayan de Oro and
Super Balita Cagayan de Oro have filed labor complaints against their former employers.
Both news media outlets, which ceased most of their operations on June 30, 2020, were owned by SunStar Publishing Incorporated with headquarters in Cebu City.
The former employees filed complaints with the National Labor Relations Commission Region 10 on February 9 for alleged illegal dismissal, nonpayment and underpayment of salaries, holiday benefits, service incentive leave, and 13th month pay, among others.
They also accused SunStar of neglect for its supposed nonpayment of employees insurance coverages and non-remittance of their SSS, Pag-IBIG, and PhilHealth contributions since February 2019. ....
