Global energy major ExxonMobil said it had long advocated for federal methane regulations as the most effective way to reduce methane emissions at scale, and now has received a shot in the arm with US President Joe Biden prioritising it as part of his administration’s plan
to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement.

ExxonMobil recently participated in the annual global roundtable of the Methane Guiding Principles (MGP), an organization comprising companies and leading civil society stakeholders committed to reducing methane emissions across the oil and gas industry value chain. ....

EDF-Led Study Finds ‘Exceptionally High’ Methane Emissions in Mexico Oil, Gas Operations, Exceeding Government Estimates
Processing facilities in Mexico’s oil and natural gas patch are emitting “exceptionally high levels of methane pollution” at 10 times the rate being reported by the government, according to a new study led by the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF).
The study tracked emissions of the potent greenhouse gas across the states of Chiapas, Tabasco, Veracruz and the Campeche coast. The methane pollution was mainly from incomplete combustion of natural gas at industrial flaring sites, researchers said.
Emissions data indicated an annual resource loss of 100 Bcf, valued at about $200 million/year, or 13 times the annual budget of Mexico’s oil and gas environmental regulator, Agencia de Seguridad, Energía y Abiente (ASEA). ....

Methane emissions fall 10% over oil output cut: IEA
PARIS, January 21, 2021
Methane emissions from the global oil and gas industry fell by an estimated 10% in 2020 as producers slashed output in response to the historic shock of the Covid-19 crisis, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said.
It also warned that these emissions could rebound strongly without greater action by companies, policy makers and regulators.
Methane is a much more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide (CO2) and makes a major contribution to global warming. According to the IEA’s 2021 update of its Methane Tracker, oil and gas operations worldwide emitted more than 70 million tonnes of methane into the atmosphere last year. This is broadly equivalent to the total energy-related CO2 emissions from the entire European Union. ....
