Project launched to combat date palm pests

By: ONA
Muscat: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has launched an experiment to use parasites of the genus tricogramma to combat red weevil pests that nestle in date palms and damage their crop.
Fifteen farms in the Wilayat of Barka have been selected for the experiment, setting a precedent in the use of biological control agents and the calculation of the number of fighter parasites needed for every tree.
Red palm weevil is considered the most prevalent, most dangerous pest in countries producing dates. It is common in humid and coastal areas in Oman and many Arab countries. It causes considerable damage to date palms’ economic output with losses constituting 80% in some Arab countries’ crops where the larva spoil large quantities of unripe fruits.  ....

Grazing livestock could reduce greenhouse gases in atmosphere, study shows
An innovative approach to livestock grazing could help eliminate climate change-causing greenhouse gases, according to a new study by University of Alberta biologists.
The research shows that a strategy called adaptive multi-paddock (AMP) grazing extracts methane gas from the atmosphere, locking it inside the soil through microbial activity. Methane gas has a climate warming effect that is 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide over a 100-year time frame.
“Grasslands are the most endangered ecosystem type worldwide because of agricultural development and tillage,” said Mark Boyce, professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and supervising author on the project. ....

FAO on seafood strategy: Keeping fish affordable and preventing new sustainability crises tops agenda

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) is targeting seafood production improvements in the Asia Pacific region to keep prices affordable and prevent sustainability crises similar to those seen in land agriculture.
According to FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu, fisheries and aquaculture have become even more crucial to global food security after the COVID-19 pandemic and is key to helping the world economy recover.
“We know that land alone will not feed us with abundant quantity and food diversity - we need Blue Transformation to secure Blue Food production, said Qu when addressing 34th session of the FAO Committee on Fisheries earlier this month. ....

It appears Pacific great blue herons have a much larger appetite for juvenile salmon than previously understood, potentially raising the complexity of salmon recovery strategies in B.C.
A new study out of UBC shows the birds are annually removing three per cent of the young fish heading to the Salish Sea. During years of low water flows predation can shoot up to to six per cent.  ....
