76-year-old dies after losing control of ATV northwest of Peterborough, Ont.: police

Police say a 76-year-old driver has died in an all-terrain vehicle crash northeast of Peterborough, Ont.
Ontario Provincial Police say the single-vehicle collision took place Sunday afternoon on an unmarked trail in North Kawartha, Ont.
They say the driver lost control of the ATV while going down a steep embankment and hit several trees.
Police say the driver, who was wearing a helmet, died from injuries sustained in the crash.
The driver has not been publicly identified.
Police say they are looking into what caused the incident.

COVID-19 Ontario: Nearly 6,000 new cases reported over past two days, ICU admissions reach all-time high

Health officials in Ontario are reporting nearly 6,000 new COVID-19 infections over the past two days as ICU admissions related to the disease reach an all-time high.
The province says it logged 2,938 infections on Monday and 3,041 on Sunday. The Ministry of Health did not report numbers yesterday due to the Easter Sunday holiday.
Right now, there are 494 patients being treated in an intensive care unit with a COVID-related critical illness, the government said.
Monday’s report brings the total number of lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases in Ontario to 364,537. This number includes 331,600 recoveries and 7,450 deaths. At least 10 of those deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours and another 12 were recorded on Sunday.  ....

Peel schools ordered to close despite Ford government's 'firm belief' they should remain open

Schools in Peel Region have been ordered to close and switch to remote learning only despite the provincial government saying it s their firm belief they should remain open.
Students in Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga will move to online learning from April 6 through to April 18 after Medical Officer of Health Dr. Lawrence Loh used his discretionary powers under Section 22 of the Health Protection and Promotion Act to close schools.
All April Break spring camps for school-age children will also be cancelled.
This closure is a necessary step to protect staff and students in Peel Region, Loh said Monday. With increasing case counts and the presence of variants of concern, we need to break chains of transmission and keep our schools safe. ....

Top doctors in Toronto, Peel and Ottawa call for provincewide stay-at-home order

Top doctors in Toronto, Peel Region and Ottawa are calling on the Ontario government to issue a provincewide stay-at-home order in an effort to control the surge of COVID-19 variants.
In the letter to Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, which is dated April 4, the doctors say that while they welcome the provincial shutdown, stronger measures are required to reverse the surge of infections.
The letter is signed by Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health Dr. Eileen de Villa, Peel Region’s Medical Officer of Health Dr. Lawrence Loh and Ottawa’s Medical Officer of Health Dr. Vera Etches. Toronto Public Health confirmed the letter was sent to Dr. David Williams “in confidence to report on what we are seeing on the ground in our regions and present possible courses of action.” ....
