SEATTLE People traveling across Puget Sound can expect delays this summer, because last month’s fire aboard the ferry Wenatchee has forced the state to use smaller vessels than normal on several routes.
Washington State Ferries is operating 18 vessels instead of the usual summer fleet of 19 boats.
Besides a reduced number of ferries, state officials say crew shortages and quarantines related to COVID-19 further limit capacity, just as peak travel season begins. Lower-capacity schedules take effect Thursday night. ....

Seattle Seafood Chain Ivar's Raises Concerns Over Shrinking Salmon from Alaska

Something troubling is going on with the size of salmon coming in from Alaska. According to a new Bloomberg report, several species of the fish have shrunk in size so rapidly that two major food companies are altering their business plan. Whole Foods redid its guidelines on salmon purchasing, and Ivar’s the iconic Pacific Northwest seafood chain is increasingly sending more salmon back to the restaurant’s supplier because they are too small.
“You know that the thicker belly sections of big salmon cook the best they remain sweet and moist over heat, where smaller fish and tail sections tend to cook quickly and therefore are prone to dry out,” Ivar’s president Bob Donegan tells Eater Seattle (the franchise location in Mukilteo Landing is the chain’s only restaurant open for full-service at the moment, but Salmon House and Acres of Clams will reopen in May). “It’s why we seek the biggest fishes we can find.” ....

Kirkland, Washington–Ziply Fiber announced plans to bring gig-speed fiber Internet service to an additional 22 markets across Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana this calendar year. This expansion will focus mostly on smaller and rural towns, and is part of the company’s multi-year $500 million investment in its network and improved service in both urban and rural settings throughout the region.
This announcement comes on the heels of last week’s launch of fiber service in Moscow, Idaho, the company’s 16
th new fiber market since it began its four-state fiber expansion last spring, after acquiring the Northwest assets of Frontier Communications for $1.35 billion.
