With One Year to Go, Beijing 2022 set to take cue from Tokyo 2020 over Covid

The choice of Beijing as host city for the 2022 Olympics, made on July 31 2015 at the 128th International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session in Kuala Lumpur, meant the Chinese capital would become the first city to host both the Summer and Winter Games, having staged the Summer event in 2008.
The award also put in place the last of three consecutive Olympics taking place in East Asia following the allotting of the 2018 Winter Games to Pyeongchang in South Korea and the 2020 Summer Games to Tokyo.
Whether Beijing - which will on Thursday (February 4) mark one year to go until its Games - will indeed be the third East Asian host of an Olympics in this period remains moot. ....

(ATR) The Greek government suspends all funding to the country s sailing federation as part of a widespread investigation.

Ekathimerini.com reports it is part of the fallout from Olympic sailing champion Sofia Bekatorou going public about being raped by her coach in 1998.
While she did not name the coach, Hellenic Sailing Federation vice president Aristidis Adamopoulos has since been identified in press reports as the alleged culprit.

Airbnb becomes first Beijing 2022 sponsor to be targeted by Uighur campaigners

Campaign groups fighting against the persecution of Uighur Muslims in China have joined forces to pressure sponsors to withdraw their support of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Groups from 10 different countries have joined the End the Uighur Genocide Movement and set their sights on Airbnb chief executive Brian Chesky.
The group is aiming to get Airbnb to withdraw its sponsorship from Beijing 2022 and has asked Chesky to meet virtually with campaigners, including those who have been detained in the alleged Uighur Muslim internment camps in China.
A digital campaign is also to be launched, which will compare photos of the accommodation normally found on Airbnb and the rooms given to Uighur Muslims in the detention camps. ....

Campaigners fighting against the persecution of Uighur Muslims in China are to target private companies sponsoring the Beijing Winter Olympics in an attempt to persuade them to use their influence with the Chinese government ahead of the 2022 event.
Uighur campaigners in 10 different countries are coming together to write to companies asking them to use their platforms to educate and inform the world of the persecution under way in Xinjiang province. The first to be targeted is the chief executive officer of Airbnb, Brian Chesky. ....
