A Derry-based support project designed for people living with a diagnosis of early or mild stage dementia who are living independently in the community with the support of their families and friends has won a highly-prestigious award.
DEEDS was announced as a Dementia Hero Award winner in the Innovation category at a virtual awards ceremony held last night.

(LEX 18) — This week marks the annual Alzheimer s Impact Movement (AIM) Advocacy Forum, when advocates from around the country lobby their respective congress members to support measures to curb Alzheimer s and other dementia.
Although this year s forum has been restricted to a virtual format, advocates say there is a lot of work to be done as the country emerges from the pandemic.
According to the Alzheimer s Association, there were at least 42,000 more deaths from Alzheimer s and other dementia in 2020 compared with averages over the previous five years. That represents a 16% increase. In Kentucky, there were 921 more deaths than expected from Alzheimer s and dementia, according to the organization. ....

The CLEAR Dementia Care© app provides advice to help carers find effective ways to interact and respond to the person with dementia to enable them to meet their needs.
Launched by dementia professionals in the Northern Health and Social Care Trust, it also provides carers with a tool to record behaviours and identify patterns to address the associated need. ....

In older adults with mild cognitive impairment or dementia, active music-making can provide cognitive benefits and also improve their quality of life and mood, says study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.
The analysis included nine studies with a total of 495 participants. The authors noted that music-based interventions could potentially provide millions of older adults with critical support for their cognitive, emotional, and social well-being.
We are excited to see these results because participating in music, like singing in a choir or playing in a drum circle, is a safe, engaging activity that our research demonstrates can support cognition at a critical time for older adults facing cognitive decline, said lead author Jennie L. Dorris, MM, of the University of Pittsburgh. ....
