CEO statement in response to new nutrition standards
VicHealth welcomes and strongly applauds the leadership and commitment of the Victorian State Government for delivering new nutrition and quality food standards that will see Victorian patients and residential aged care residents access higher quality and more culturally-diverse and locally-sourced meals.
By introducing these new standards, the Victorian Government continues to support and advocate for healthy, diverse and locally-grown diets for Victorians.
VicHealth CEO Dr Sandro Demaio welcomed the new food standards that will be finalised and put in place by the end of this year.
“This is fantastic news for the health and wellbeing of Victorians. The new standards for hospitals and aged care in Victoria recognise the important role food plays supporting physical and emotional wellbeing. Good food is crucial in supporting healthy ageing and optimal recovery for Victorians,” Dr Demaio said. ....

We asked two experts to watch The Father and Supernova. These new films show the fear and loss that come with dementia

Two new films explore the fear of forgetting, loss of control, and other complexities that accompany a dementia diagnosis. The Father and Supernova, both released this month, grapple with the challenges confronting people living with dementia and those who love them.
Dementia is the seventh leading cause of death worldwide, and the second leading cause of death in Australia. The media has an important role in shaping public understanding of poorly understood conditions such as dementia, and it is pleasing to see it considered thoughtfully in both films.
We watched these films through our lenses as a clinician and a neuroscientist. The different causes and conditions that make up the umbrella term of dementia mean the experiences of people living with it and their loved ones can differ widely. These films illustrate this well. ....

Christie Brinkley: Ageing is the last frontier for the modelling business

Christie Brinkley thinks ageing is the last frontier for the modelling industry.
The 67-year-old model thinks the business has evolved markedly over recent decades, but she still thinks ageism remains a problem.
She explained: Women tell me that they want to see themselves in there. They want to be stylish but they don’t want to look like they’re trying too hard. They want to be represented.
I’ve been in this industry for 47 years now and I can’t begin to tell you how much it has evolved, but ageing is the last frontier.
Despite ongoing issues, Christie remains in love with her job and is desperate to keep working. ....

Long-term care for the aged in Ghana is on the back burner. Here is how to change it

Providing long-term care is a challenge to states around the world. In rich countries, supporting frail and disabled adults is a major budget item, and even then, the care provided can be inadequate.
The population profiles of poorer countries are beginning to change, with the number of old people increasing. But the response of many African governments has been to bury their heads in the sand.
Take the case of Ghana. It is one of the countries with a higher percentage of older adults on the continent, but it’s failed to pass any meaningful legislation to reflect this. A policy was drafted in 2003 and updated in 2010. But Parliament has never passed it. Even this policy does not envision what long-term care might look like. Instead, it puts the responsibility for care of chronic conditions on families. ....
