The Letters of Oscar Wilde | Irish America

By Irish America Staff
One of Oscar Wilde’s wishes was that he be talked about 100 years after his death. Well, his wish has been granted. November 30 marked the centenary of the writer’s passing at the age of 46. To commemorate this anniversary, his grandson Merlin Holland in conjunction with the late Rupert Hart-Davis has published
The Complete Letters of Oscar Wilde, spanning his years as a student at Portora Royal School in Enniskillen to his death in 1900. As Holland points out in the Introduction, “To read his letters, particularly those written to intimate friends without thought of publication, is as close as we shall come to the magic of hearing him in person.” The book is available through Henry Holt publishers ($45.00). ♦ ....

Although it would be foolish to suggest that the influential and wildly productive Jean-Léon Gérôme is lost to history, it is safe to say that the great academician is perhaps less widely known today than his students Thomas Eakins and Mary Cassatt. And while it would be equally foolish to suggest that Frank Duveneck is but a footnote to his more recognizable students, such as John Henry Twachtman, the Kentucky-born artist is not the name he was in his day. Reviewing a 1972 show at Manhattan’s Chapellier Galleries, critic John Canaday described Duveneck as “a painter who promised to establish a major position in American art but stopped halfway through his career and s ....

Best in class: Our top writers pick their favourite 2020 titles

Not the least of our losses in this plague year was one of our greatest poets, Derek Mahon. Washing Up (Gallery Press) is a glorious late harvest - vigorous, funny, angry, blithe - beautifully produced, like all Gallery editions, and including, appropriately, a lovely tribute to another luminary of the dead poets society, Ciaran Carson. Mahon s last is vividly alive. Vincent van Gogh: A Life in Letters, edited by Nienke Bakker, Leo Jansen and Hans Luijten (Thames & Hudson) is a judicious selection from the magnificent six-volume Complete Letters of 2009. Had he not been a painter, Van Gogh could have made his name as a writer, as his correspondence shows. Impassioned, often heartbreaking, furious, funny and tender, these letters form a unique testament from a pivotal figure in 19th-century art. For my third choice, I am going to flout the rules by picking a book to be published in January 2021: Billy O Callaghan s Life Sentences (Cape) is a superb and moving no ....
