The Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) is proposing a 30 km/h speed limit for built-up zones such as urban and residential areas, cities and villages as part of the national road safety plan for 2021 until 2030, reports
Free Malaysia Today.
The proposal for a 30 km/h limit in the zones mentioned is part of a wider “Streets for Life” campaign under the 6th United Nations Global Road Safety Week (UNGRSW), which aims to empower communities across Southeast Asia to implement the 30 km/h limit in areas where pedestrians mix with motorised traffic, the road safety institute said in a statement. ....

Not just motorised vehicle riders but every person has a human right for safe commuting. But over 50 million people get injured and 1.35 million die every year due to road traffic crashes worldwide. More alarming is the fact that 90 per cent of these injuries and deaths occur in developing countries. Road traffic crashes are also the leading cause of death around the world for children and young people between 15 and 29 years of age. Over-speeding is identified as a major cause of almost 70% of these road traffic crashes in countries like India.

There is hope: stronger evidence is piling on to reduce maximum road travel speed to 30 km/hour. Cities that have implemented this maximum road travel speed of 30 km/hour have shown lifesaving decline in road traffic crashes too. That is why, the commitment to reduce maximum travel speed limit to 30 km/hour is also a part of declaration endorsed by the governments last year. ....

Chilling stats and inaction

Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana has alerted the public to an alarming increase in killer road accidents recently. During the past seven days, as many as 23 people have died in road mishaps, he says. Prangs, near misses and the attendant chaos on roads have become the order of the day, again. This may be taken as an indication that the country has returned to normal earlier than expected. During the pandemic-related lockdowns and travel restrictions, there was a sharp drop in road fatalities, which began to increase gradually as the country limped back to normalcy.
Road accidents snuff out more lives than coronavirus does in this country. Deaths due to road mishaps average eight a day. Not even the war destroyed lives at this rate. The National Council for Road Safety has revealed that 2,641 fatal road accidents caused as many as 2,829 deaths in 2019, when 10,691 mishaps occurred. There were 776 pedestrians, 1,162 motorcyclists, 282 drivers, 405 ....
