Landlords must accept Section 8 housing vouchers under new county law

Landlords in Alachua County will no longer be able to discriminate against people who rely on rental assistance from the government through housing vouchers, officials said.
County leaders have been playing a cat-and-mouse game of legislative changes to keep up with landlords who find ways to avoid accepting the Section 8 vouchers, which are housing subsidies.
This week, they approved amendments to the county s anti-discrimination housing ordinance that take effect Sept. 1.
Despite laws that say landlords may not summarily reject those using the subsidies to pay rent, renters hoping to use them say they are frequently thwarted by apartment complexes who simply refuse to accept them. ....

When the term “human trafficking” is mentioned, many people get the image of men, women and children in the back of a truck or in a shipping container being secretly transported across an international border.
The reality of human trafficking is that it happens out in the open in our neighborhoods and communities.
Florida consistently ranks in the top states for instances of human trafficking and Jacksonville is situated with the intersection of Interstates 95 and 10 making it easier for trafficking networks to move people from one place to another.
Survivors of human trafficking have significant legal hurdles to pass to rejoin society. ....

Advocates: Gainesville's New Median Ordinance Likely To Affect City's Homeless Most

The new measure makes panhandling on a street median that’s 6 feet or less wide illegal.
While city and police officials insist the ordinance is not targeting them, people who are homeless and their advocates say there’s no question who will be hurt the most.
“I’m living on the streets,” said Charles Smith, 35, who has been panhandling in the city for about a month, “and now you want to fine me because I’m out here trying to make a living?”
Smith said it’s so much easier for panhandlers if they can stand along a median as drivers waiting at a red light have time to think about giving spare change. ....
