Maersk completes £1.1 billion bulk annuity buy-in

Danish transportation and energy organisation Maersk has completed a Â£1.1 billion pensions bulk annuity transaction with Legal and General.
The arrangement will secure the defined benefit (DB)Â pension benefits of 1,900 deferred members and 3,000 retired members of the Maersk Retirement Benefit Scheme, removing their investment and longevity risks from the scheme. Members will not see any change in the amount of their benefits or how these are paid following the transaction.
The process took a number of steps to de-risk the scheme and put it in a strong position to successfully complete the buy-in transaction during the current turbulent market. ....

The Maersk Retirement Benefit Scheme has agreed a £1.1bn (€1.2bn) bulk annuity transaction with Legal & General Assurance Society Limited, which will secure the benefits of around 1,900 deferred members and 3,000 retirees.
The scheme’s trustee has, over the past few years, taken several steps to de-risk the scheme including fully hedging its interest rate and inflation exposures, it was announced.
This approach put the Maersk scheme in a strong position to weather the recent market volatility and take advantage of an opportunity to further de-risk by entering into a buy-in transaction with Legal & General.
Nigel Pusey, chair of the scheme’s trustee, said: “After many years of careful management and de-risking we have now secured our members’ benefits through a buy-in with Legal & General.” ....

Maersk Retirement Benefit Scheme, Ware, England, insured £1.1 billion ($1.5 billion) in liabilities through a full plan buy-in with Legal & General Assurance Society, said a spokeswoman at Willis Towers Watson, adviser on the deal.
In its first buy-in deal, the £1.1 billion plan for shipping company Maersk secured the benefits of around 1,900 participants that are yet to retire and 3,000 retirees.
Law firm Travers Smith also advised the trustees.
After many years of careful management and derisking we have now secured our members benefits through a buy-in with Legal & General.
