Opinion | To boost literacy, Michigan must invest in school librarians

I believe that in order for Michigan to both address the needs of underserved children and to center on equity and excellence in education, we MUST reinvest in the school libraries in our state.

There are multiple studies that show the presence of a school library staffed by a certified school librarian (also called library media specialist in Michigan) in a school correlates to high student achievement. These studies also show that students who are economically disadvantaged, Black, Hispanic or have disabilities benefit proportionally more than general students from the presence of a certified school librarian. ....

Western students connect with legislators to advocate for environmental policies

April 22, 2021
KALAMAZOO, Mich. From drinking water and air quality to renewable energy, environmental policy decisions impact every facet of our lives. Instead of just learning about the impacts, a group of Western Michigan University students got the opportunity to urge lawmakers to take action.
It was an experience I ve never had before, says
Mitchell Denolf, a senior from Grand Rapids, Michigan, studying integrated supply management. I ve been to some town council meetings when I was younger but never had the opportunity to actually have that back-and-forth discussion with a representative myself.

House budget bill proposes big changes to absentee ballot applications

The proposal is included in a bill that outlines funding for the Department of State along with other agencies.
The budget is always an important place to focus on government efficiency. Local clerks have always had responsibility for sending out absentee ballot applications.   The Secretary of State s office created confusion among the public and press by sending out a mass mailing last year, said Rep. Greg VanWoerkom, R-Norton Shores, the lead sponsor of the budget bill.
This eliminates confusion, makes the process simpler to understand and keeps the exact same level of service and access for voters.
Former President Donald Trump fueled mass confusion about Michigan mailings when he inaccurately accused Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson of mailing ballots  not applications  to every voter. Despite Benson and the  news media noting this inaccuracy many times, Trump and Michigan Republicans constantly conflated ballots with applications before and after t ....

GOP wants to split Michigan Electoral College votes. That would help the GOP.

That’s a system that would have allowed former President Donald Trump to evenly split the state’s electors with Biden, despite his loss.
State Reps. Beau LaFave or Iron Mountain and Jeff Yaroch of Richmond contend their legislation is about giving “voice” to voters in all parts of Michigan, not just those in major population centers. It would encourage presidential candidates to campaign in diverse regions of the state, they told colleagues in committee.
“I’m not trying to rig the system for any political party obviously, both of them have massive flaws but we’ve got the situation in Michigan where a lot of people aren’t heard, and they don’t feel as though they’re being heard, and that their vote doesn’t count,” LaFave said.  ....
