Kitsap Transit will be able to slowly reintroduce Sunday bus service over the next two years and fund $125 million in capital projects thanks to a surprisingly healthy economy and an influx of federal funds, transit officials announced Tuesday.
Kitsap Transit axed Sunday bus service during the Great Recession, and its return has remained a contentious topic in the decade-plus since. Strong sales tax growth over the last several years combined with federal COVID-19 relief funds have resulted in a budget surplus that Kitsap Transit plans to use to stand up Sunday service and fund a plethora of capital projects. ....

BREMERTON, Wash. - Central Kitsap School Board President Bruce Richards typically opens meetings in the same manner: following a call to order, he explains the rules for public comment before reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.
In the future, Richards could be lending his voice for another type of pledge, one designed as a gesture of gratitude and respect for the indigenous people who first called Kitsap County home.
Last week, Richards and other members expressed the desire to include land acknowledgments that honor Kitsap’s two federally recognized tribes: the Suquamish and Port Gamble S’Klallam, the Kitsap Sun reported. ....

Becky Erickson reverses plans, announces re-election bid for Poulsbo mayor

POULSBO – Mayor Becky Erickson has announced plans to seek a fourth term running the city of Poulsbo, reversing course on her plans to step away from the office at the end of her current term later this year.
The announcement makes Erickson the first person to publicly announce a bid for the office, which will be up for election later this year. Candidates can begin filing with the Kitsap County Auditor’s Office to appear on ballots for offices beginning May 17. No candidates had filed with the state’s Public Disclosure Commission to raise money for a run for the seat as of Tuesday. ....
