During the past two years, 17-year-old Tayé Baker has made dramatic changes to his diet and lifestyle and found a brighter future. By shedding more than a third of his body weight 118 pounds after a type 2 diabetes diagnosis and life-threatening bout of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in August 2019, the 5-foot-11 Indianapolis teen put the health condition in remission.
Along the way, there were daily sit-ups up to 100 per day and 45-minute daily stationary bike sessions; a whole new way of eating (goodbye Mom’s grease-fried chicken); and a brief experience with insulin injections that are now in the rearview mirror. WASHINGTON Black and Hispanic people with COVID-19 and diabetes are more likely than Caucasians to die or have serious complications, according to a new study published in the Endocrine Society s
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.
Health disparities refer to unequal health status or health care between groups of people due to differences in their background, physical traits or their environment. These differences include race/ethnicity, country of origin, sex, income and disability. Minorities are disproportionately affected by diabetes and COVID-19 and are more likely to develop serious complications like diabetic ketoacidosis, a condition that occurs when your body produces high levels of blood acids. ....
