Beshear warns of dominant variant attacking young people

FRANKFORT, Ky. (KT) – Gov. Andy Beshear warned that Kentucky may be in another plateau when it comes to COVID-19 cases after weeks of declines, and that the dominant variant of the coronavirus is targeting the younger population.  
During a Monday press briefing from the Capitol, the governor said while Kentucky has leveled off in new cases, at least four other states are seeing increases, due to what has become known as the UK Variant since it was first identified in the United Kingdom.
“What we’re unfortunately seeing is that they are infecting more young people,” he said.  “Those young people are getting really sick, and hospitalizations for younger Americans are going up.  None of us want that, so what do we do?  Number one, until we win, continue to wear that mask and make sure you’re doing the right things.  Number two, get vaccinated as qui ....

GOVERNOR BESHEAR’S DAILY COVID-19 STATEMENT
FRANKFORT, Ky. (March 31, 2021) – On Wednesday, Gov. Andy Beshear announced all Kentuckians 16 and older will be eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine April 5. Only the Pfizer vaccine is approved for 16 and 17-year-olds.
“This is a good day. This news means that we will beat the president’s goal by a month to have COVID-19 vaccinations opened up to everyone,” said Gov. Beshear. “We are seeing in a number of states an increase in cases and hospitalizations, and it’s happening among younger people. We want to get ahead of the more aggressive COVID-19 variants and make sure that we fill every available appointment. Make a plan to get your shot of hope.” ....

Gov. announces 819 new COVID cases, provides prison udpate

Governor Andy Beshear reported the lowest number of new cases of COVID-19 for a Tuesday in over a month during a briefing that also included an update on outbreaks at prison facilities in Lyon County.
There were 819 new cases and 24 additional deaths, the positivity rate was 3.87 percent and the governor said hospitalizations, ICU admissions and patients on a ventilator were all down.
Kentucky set another record for vaccinations last week and at least 1,026,047 Kentuckians have received at least their first dose.
The number of inmates and staff in state correctional facilities infected has spiked by over 600 in the last two weeks and Executive Cabinet Secretary J. Michael Brown says almost all of the new cases have been at the Kentucky State Penitentiary and West Kentucky Correctional Complex in Lyon County. ....
