In an effort to play catch-up with other racing jurisdictions in the mid-Atlantic region that have already adopted or are in the process of implementing model rules regarding medication abuse and stepped-up penalty scales, the West Virginia Racing Commission (WVRC) voted to send four proposals backed by the Association of Racing Commissioners International (ARCI) out for a 30-day public commentary period during the board s May 18 meeting.
But when the WVRC meets again to vote on whether to adopt those rules at a yet-to-be-scheduled date, commission chairman Ken Lowe, Jr. said during Tuesday s tele-meeting he won t support the system of fines included within some of those ARCI model rules because he believes they are too onerous for West Virginia trainers to bear. ....

USTA Joins Oklahoma HISA Lawsuit | Standardbred Canada

The State of Oklahoma, joined by the U.S. Trotting Association, Hanover Shoe Farms, the State of West Virginia and others, filed a federal lawsuit in the Eastern Division of Kentucky U.S. District Court challenging the constitutionality of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act on Monday (April 26).
Other plaintiffs in the complaint filed for a declaratory judgment and injunctive relief are the Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission, West Virginia Racing Commission, Oklahoma Quarter Horse Racing Association and three Oklahoma racetracks – Remington Park, Will Rogers Downs and Fair Meadows.
“The U.S. Trotting Association has been pressing these unconstitutionality objections for more than four years and we have been ignored,” said USTA President and Hanover Shoe Farms President & CEO Russell Williams. “Instead, Senator McConnell sneaked HISA through at the last minute, without any hearing or debate, in the middle of a 5,500-page, must-pass omnibus funding measure. ....

Charles Town releases stakes schedule

CHARLES TOWN â Following up on its successful August card that saw the Charles Town Classic (G2) and Charles Town Oaks (G3) run on the same day for the first time, Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races will once again showcase its two graded stakes on the same program in 2021 following approval by the West Virginia Racing Commission at its Tuesday morning meeting.
The $800,000 Charles Town Classic and $400,000 Charles Town Oaks will headline the action on an Aug. 27 card that will include nine stakes races totaling $1,850,000 in purse money. It will get underway at a special first post of 5 p.m. ....
