Center for Surface Combat Systems Det West Changes Hands; Capt. Will Retire after 38 Years

US Navy
SAN DIEGO – Capt. Jon Grant, officer in charge, turned over command of Center for Surface Combat Systems (CSCS) Det West to Capt. Brandon Bryan, commanding officer of CSCS’ Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare Training Center (FASW), April 30.
Grant will retire from the U.S. Navy after 38 years of honorable service, Oct. 1, 2021.
A ceremony was not held but an official turnover was conducted by Capt. Dave Stoner, commanding officer, CSCS.
“When you look at Det West’s accomplishments since February of 2020, when Jon assumed duties as officer in charge, it is apparent that he and his team have contributed vastly to the surface combat systems community,” Stoner said. “Det West successfully delivered over 60 courses of instruction that supported over 2,770 U.S. and international students. Jon was responsible for developing junior Sailors and preparing them for some of the most challenging operational environments. In addition, he ensured CSCS was able to ....

Bringing the School House to the Waterfront: USS America hosts Critical Training with CSCS Yokosuka > United States Navy > News-Stories

USS America (LHA 6) found an inventive way to do it.
For the Navy’s only forward-deployed amphibious ready group (ARG), the best way to save time, money and resources was to think outside the box: instead of sending Sailors to school in the continental U.S., America brought the school to the Sailors.
“Overcoming layered challenges is part and parcel of being a forward-deployed naval force. It’s what we do, and that’s just what we’ve done here,” said Capt. Greg Baker, Amphibious Squadron (PHIBRON) 11 Commodore. “We found a way to get maritime warfighters from multiple FDNF ships the specialized training they need to stay lethal, resilient and ready to fight tonight – right here in theatre – and I couldn’t be prouder of the team on USS America who spearheaded the effort.” ....

WASHINGTON It has been nearly four years since one of the worst years in modern U.S. Navy history, when a string of accidents and collisions sidelined three ships and resulted in the deaths of 17 sailors. But the service’s top surface warfare officer wants to make clear that it hasn’t moved on. ....

Unleash Enlisted Sailors as WTIs

Johnston (DD-557).
1 Declaring to his new crew and guests, “This is going to be a fighting ship,” he motioned toward the bunting-draped destroyer and added, “I intend to go in harm’s way, and anyone who doesn’t want to go along had better get off right now.” He continued resolutely, “I will never again retreat from an enemy force.”
In recognition of his valiant spirit and heroism in fighting his ship until she sank in the Battle off Samar on 25 October 1944, Evans posthumously was awarded the Medal of Honor, and the culture he set serves as an example to all Navy ships striving for battle-minded and combat-ready crews. ....
